でも、じっくりかんがえてみて、こうつけくわえた。

But, after some thought, he added:

「〈なつける〉って、どういうこと？」

“What does that mean — ‘tame’?”

「このあたりのひとじゃないね。」とキツネがいった。「なにかさがしてるの？」

“You do not live here,” said the fox. “What is it that you are looking for?”

「ひとをさがしてる。」と王子くんはいった。「〈なつける〉って、どういうこと？」

“I am looking for men,” said the little prince. “What does that mean — ‘tame’?”

「ひと。」とキツネがいった。「あいつら、てっぽうをもって、かりをする。いいめいわくだよ！　ニワトリもかってるけど、それだけがあいつらのとりえなんだ。ニワトリはさがしてる？」

“Men,” said the fox. “They have guns, and they hunt. It is very disturbing. They also raise chickens. These are their only interests. Are you looking for chickens?”

「ううん。」と王子くんはいった。「友だちをさがしてる。〈なつける〉って、どういうこと？」

“No,” said the little prince. “I am looking for friends. What does that mean — ‘tame’?”

「もうだれもわすれちゃったけど、」とキツネはいう。「〈きずなをつくる〉ってことだよ……」

“It is an act too often neglected,” said the fox. “It means to establish ties.”

「きずなをつくる？」

“‘To establish ties’?”

「そうなんだ。」とキツネはいう。「おいらにしてみりゃ、きみはほかのおとこの子10まんにんと、なんのかわりもない。きみがいなきゃダメだってこともない。きみだって、おいらがいなきゃダメだってことも、たぶんない。きみにしてみりゃ、おいらはほかのキツネ10まんびきと、なんのかわりもないから。でも、きみがおいらをなつけたら、おいらたちはおたがい、あいてにいてほしい、っておもうようになる。きみは、おいらにとって、せかいにひとりだけになる。おいらも、きみにとって、せかいで１ぴきだけになる……」

“Just that,” said the fox. “To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world…”

「わかってきた。」と王子くんはいった。「いちりんの花があるんだけど……あの子は、ぼくをなつけたんだとおもう……」

“I am beginning to understand,” said the little prince. “There is a flower… I think that she has tamed me…”

「かもね。」とキツネはいった。「ちきゅうじゃ、どんなことだっておこるから……」

“It is possible,” said the fox. “On the Earth one sees all sorts of things.”

「えっ！　ちきゅうの話じゃないよ。」と王子くんはいった。

“Oh, but this is not on the Earth!” said the little prince.

キツネはとってもふしぎがった。

The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious.

「ちがう星の話？」

“On another planet?”

「うん。」

“Yes.”

「その星、かりうどはいる？」

“Are there hunters on that planet?”

「いない。」

“No.”

「いいねえ！　ニワトリは？」

“Ah, that is interesting! Are there chickens?”

「いない。」

“No.”

「そううまくはいかないか。」とキツネはためいきをついた。

“Nothing is perfect,” sighed the fox.

さて、キツネはもとの話にもどって、

But he came back to his idea.

「おいらのまいにち、いつもおなじことのくりかえし。おいらはニワトリをおいかけ、ひとはおいらをおいかける。ニワトリはどれもみんなおんなじだし、ひとだってだれもみんなおんなじ。だから、おいら、ちょっとうんざりしてる。でも、きみがおいらをなつけるんなら、おいらのまいにちは、ひかりがあふれたみたいになる。おいらは、ある足音を、ほかのどんなやつとも聞きわけられるようになる。ほかの音なら、おいら穴あなぐらのなかにかくれるけど、きみの音だったら、はやされたみたいに、穴ぐらからとんででていく。

“My life is very monotonous,” the fox said. “I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the men are just alike. And, in consequence, I am a little bored. But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life. I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow.

それから、ほら！　あのむこうの小むぎばたけ、見える？　おいらはパンをたべないから、小むぎってどうでもいいものなんだ。小むぎばたけを見ても、なんにもかんじない。それって、なんかせつない！　でも、きみのかみの毛って、こがね色。だから、小むぎばたけは、すっごくいいものにかわるんだ、きみがおいらをなつけたら、だけど！　小むぎはこがね色だから、おいらはきみのことを思いだすよ。そうやって、おいらは小むぎにかこまれて、風の音をよく聞くようになる……」

And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder? I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad. But you have hair that is the color of gold. Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you. And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat…”

キツネはだんまりして、王子くんをじっと見つめて、

The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time.

「おねがい……おいらをなつけておくれ！」といった。

“Please — tame me!” he said.

「よろこんで。」と王子くんはへんじをした。「でもあんまりじかんがないんだ。友だちを見つけて、たくさんのことを知らなきゃなんない。」

“I want to, very much,” the little prince replied. “But I have not much time. I have friends to discover, and a great many things to understand.”

「自分のなつけたものしか、わからないよ。」とキツネはいった。「ひとは、ひまがぜんぜんないから、なんにもわからない。ものうりのところで、できあがったものだけをかうんだ。でも、友だちをうるやつなんて、どこにもいないから、ひとには、友だちってものがちっともいない。友だちがほしいなら、おいらをなつけてくれ！」

“One only understands the things that one tames,” said the fox. “Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. If you want a friend, tame me…”

「なにをすればいいの？」と王子くんはいった。

“What must I do, to tame you?” asked the little prince.

「気ながにやらなきゃいけない。」とキツネはこたえる。「まずは、おいらからちょっとはなれたところにすわる。たとえば、その草むらにね。おいらはきみをよこ目で見て、きみはなにもしゃべらない。ことばは、すれちがいのもとなんだ。でも、１日、１日、ちょっとずつそばにすわってもいいようになる……」

“You must be very patient,” replied the fox. “First you will sit down at a little distance from me — like that — in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings. But you will sit a little closer to me, every day…”

あくる日、王子くんはまたやってきた。

The next day the little prince came back.

「おんなじじかんに、来たほうがいいよ。」とキツネはいった。「そうだね、きみがごごの４じに来るなら、３じにはもう、おいら、うきうきしてくる。それからじかんがどんどんすすむと、ますますうきうきしてるおいらがいて、４じになるころには、ただもう、そわそわどきどき。そうやって、おいらは、しあわせをかみしめるんだ！　でも、でたらめなじかんにくるなら、いつ心をおめかししていいんだか、わからない……きまりごとがいるんだよ。」

“It would have been better to come back at the same hour,” said the fox. “If, for example, you come at four o’clock in the afternoon, then at three o’clock I shall begin to be happy. I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances. At four o’clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about. I shall show you how happy I am! But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you… One must observe the proper rites…”

「きまりごとって、なに？」と王子くんはいった。

“What is a rite?” asked the little prince.

「これもだれもわすれちゃったけど、」とキツネはいう。「１日をほかの１日と、１じかんをほかの１じかんと、べつのものにしてしまうもののことなんだ。たとえば、おいらをねらうかりうどにも、きまりごとがある。あいつら、木ようは村のむすめとダンスをするんだ。だから、木ようはすっごくいい日！　おいらはブドウばたけまでぶらぶらあるいていく。もし、かりうどがじかんをきめずにダンスしてたら、どの日もみんなおんなじようになって、おいらの心やすまる日がすこしもなくなる。」

“Those also are actions too often neglected,” said the fox. “They are what make one day different from other days, one hour from other hours. There is a rite, for example, among my hunters. Every Thursday they dance with the village girls. So Thursday is a wonderful day for me! I can take a walk as far as the vineyards. But if the hunters danced at just any time, every day would be like every other day, and I should never have any vacation at all.”

こんなふうにして、王子くんはキツネをなつけた。そして、そろそろ行かなきゃならなくなった。

So the little prince tamed the fox. And when the hour of his departure drew near —

「はあ。」とキツネはいった。「……なみだがでちゃう。」

“Ah,” said the fox, “I shall cry.”

「きみのせいだよ。」と王子くんはいった。「ぼくは、つらいのはぜったいいやなんだ。でも、きみは、ぼくになつけてほしかったんでしょ……」

“It is your own fault,” said the little prince. “I never wished you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame you…”

「そうだよ。」とキツネはいった。

“Yes, that is so,” said the fox.

「でも、いまにもなきそうじゃないか！」と王子くんはいった。

“But now you are going to cry!” said the little prince.

「そうだよ。」とキツネはいった。

“Yes, that is so,” said the fox.

「じゃあ、きみにはなんのいいこともないじゃない！」

“Then it has done you no good at all!”

「いいことはあったよ。」とキツネはいった。「小むぎの色のおかげで。」

“It has done me good,” said the fox, “because of the color of the wheat fields.”

それからこうつづけた。

And then he added:

「バラの庭に行ってみなよ。きみの花が、せかいにひとつだけってことがわかるはず。おいらにさよならをいいにもどってきたら、ひみつをひとつおしえてあげる。」

“Go and look again at the roses. You will understand now that yours is unique in all the world. Then come back to say goodbye to me, and I will make you a present of a secret.”

王子くんは、またバラの庭に行った。

The little prince went away, to look again at the roses.

「きみたちは、ぼくのバラとはちっともにていない。きみたちは、まだなんでもない。」と、その子はたくさんのバラにいった。「だれもきみたちをなつけてないし、きみたちもだれひとりなつけていない。きみたちは、であったときのぼくのキツネとおんなじ。あの子は、ほかのキツネ10まんびきと、なんのかわりもなかった。でも、ぼくがあの子を友だちにしたから、もういまでは、あの子はせかいにただ１ぴきだけ。」

“You are not at all like my rose,” he said. “As yet you are nothing. No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one. You are like my fox when I first knew him. He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But I have made him my friend, and now he is unique in all the world.”

するとたくさんのバラは、ばつがわるそうにした。

And the roses were very much embarrassed.

「きみたちはきれいだけど、からっぽだ。」と、その子はつづける。「きみたちのために死ぬことなんてできない。もちろん、ぼくの花だって、ふつうにとおりすがったひとから見れば、きみたちとおんなじなんだとおもう。でも、あの子はいるだけで、きみたちぜんぶよりも、だいじなんだ。だって、ぼくが水をやったのは、あの子。だって、ぼくがガラスのおおいに入れたのは、あの子。だって、ぼくがついたてでまもったのは、あの子。だって、ぼくが毛虫をつぶしてやったのも（２、３びき、チョウチョにするためにのこしたけど）、あの子。だって、ぼくが、もんくとか、じまんとか、たまにだんまりだってきいてやったのは、あの子なんだ。だって、あの子はぼくのバラなんだもん。」

“You are beautiful, but you are empty,” he went on. “One could not die for you. To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you — the rose that belongs to me. But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses: because it is she that I have watered; because it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the two or three that we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or ever sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose.”

それから、その子はキツネのところへもどってきた。

And he went back to meet the fox.

「さようなら。」と、その子がいうと……

“Goodbye,” he said.

「さようなら。」とキツネがいった。「おいらのひみつだけど、すっごくかんたんなことなんだ。心でなくちゃ、よく見えない。もののなかみは、目では見えない、ってこと。」

“Goodbye,” said the fox. “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

「もののなかみは、目では見えない。」と、王子くんはもういちどくりかえした。わすれないように。

“What is essential is invisible to the eye,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

「バラのためになくしたじかんが、きみのバラをそんなにもだいじなものにしたんだ。」

“It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.”

「バラのためになくしたじかん……」と、王子くんはいった。わすれないように。

“It is the time I have wasted for my rose — ” said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember.

「ひとは、ほんとのことを、わすれてしまった。」とキツネはいった。「でも、きみはわすれちゃいけない。きみは、じぶんのなつけたものに、いつでもなにかをかえさなくちゃいけない。きみは、きみのバラに、なにかをかえすんだ……」

“Men have forgotten this truth,” said the fox. “But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose…”

「ぼくは、ぼくのバラになにかをかえす……」と、王子くんはもういちどくりかえした。わすれないように。

“I am responsible for my rose,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

「こんにちは。」と王子くんがいうと、

Good morning,” said the little prince.

「こんにちは。」とポイントがかりがいった。

“Good morning”, said the railway switchman.

「ここでなにしてるの？」と王子くんがいうと、

“What do you do here?” the little prince asked.

「おきゃくを1000にんずつわけてるんだ。」とポイントがかりがいった。「きかんしゃにおきゃくがのってて、そいつをおまえは右だ、おまえは左だって、やってくんだよ。」

“I sort out travelers, in bundles of a thousand” , said the switchman. “I send off the trains that carry them: now to the right, now to the left.”

すると、きかんしゃが、ぴかっ、びゅん、かみなりみたいに、ごろごろごろ。ポイントがかりのいるたてものがゆれた。

And a brilliantly lighted express train shook the switchman’s cabin as it rushed by with a roar like thunder.

「ずいぶんいそいでるね。」と王子くんはいった。「なにかさがしてるの？」

“They are in a great hurry,” said the little prince. “What are they looking for?”

「それは、うごかしてるやつだって、わからんよ。」とポイントがかりはいった。

“Not even the locomotive engineer knows that,” said the switchman.

すると、こんどはぎゃくむきに、ぴかっ、びゅん、ごろごろごろ。

And a second brilliantly lighted express thundered by, in the opposite direction.

「もうもどってきたの？」と王子くんがきくと……

“Are they coming back already?” demanded the little prince.

「おんなじのじゃないよ。」とポイントがかりがいった。「いれかえだ。」

“These are not the same ones,” said the switchman. “It is an exchange.”

「じぶんのいるところが気にいらないの？」

“Were they not satisfied where they were?” asked the little prince.

「ひとは、じぶんのいるところが、ぜったい気にいらないんだ。」とポイントがかりがいった。

“No one is ever satisfied where he is,” said the switchman.

すると、またまた、ぴかっ、びゅん、ごろごろごろ。

And they heard the roaring thunder of a third brilliantly lighted express.

「さっきのおきゃくをおいかけてるの？」と王子くんはきいた。

“Are they pursuing the first travelers?” demanded the little prince.

「だれもおっかけてなんかないよ。」とポイントがかりはいった。「なかでねてるか、あくびをしてる。子どもたちだけが、まどガラスに鼻をおしつけてる。」

“They are pursuing nothing at all,” said the switchman. “They are asleep in there, or if they are not asleep they are yawning. Only the children are flattening their noses against the windowpanes.”

「子どもだけが、じぶんのさがしものがわかってるんだね。」と王子くんはいった。「パッチワークのにんぎょうにじかんをなくして、それがだいじなものになって、だからそれをとりあげたら、ないちゃうんだ……」

“Only the children know what they are looking for,” said the little prince. “They waste their time over a rag doll and it becomes very important to them; and if anybody takes it away from them, they cry…”

「うらやましいよ。」とポイントがかりはいった。

“They are lucky,” the switchman said.

XXIII

「こんにちは。」と、王子くんがいうと、

“Good morning,” said the little prince.

「こんにちは。」と、ものうりがいった。

“Good morning,” said the merchant.

ものうりはクスリをうっていた。そのクスリは、のどのからからをおさえるようにできていて、１しゅうかんにひとつぶで、もう、のみたいっておもわなくなるんだ。

This was a merchant who sold pills that had been invented to quench thirst. You need only swallow one pill a week, and you would feel no need of anything to drink.

「どうして、そんなのをうるの？」と王子くんはいった。

“Why are you selling those?” asked the little prince.

「むだなじかんをはぶけるからだ。」と、ものうりはいった。「はかせがかぞえたんだけど、１しゅうかんに53ぷんもむだがはぶける。」

“Because they save a tremendous amount of time,” said the merchant. “Computations have been made by experts. With these pills, you save fifty-three minutes in every week.”

「その53ぷんをどうするの？」

“And what do I do with those fifty-three minutes?”

「したいことをするんだ……」

“Anything you like…”

王子くんはかんがえる。『ぼく、53ぷんもじゆうになるんなら、ゆっくりゆーっくり、水くみ場にあるいていくんだけど……』

“As for me,” said the little prince to himself, “if I had fifty-three minutes to spend as I liked, I should walk at my leisure toward a spring of fresh water.”

ХXIV

おかしくなって、さばくに下りてから、８日め。ぼくは、ものうりの話をききながら、ほんのすこしだけのこっていた水を、ぐいとのみほした。

It was now the eighth day since I had had my accident in the desert, and I had listened to the story of the merchant as I was drinking the last drop of my water supply.

「へえ！」と、ぼくは王子くんにいった。「たいへんけっこうな思いで話だけど、まだひこうきがなおってないし、もう、のむものもない。ぼくも、ゆっくりゆーっくり水くみ場にあるいていけると、うれしいんだけど！」

“Ah,” I said to the little prince, “these memories of yours are very charming; but I have not yet succeeded in repairing my plane; I have nothing more to drink; and I, too, should be very happy if I could walk at my leisure toward a spring of fresh water!”

「友だちのキツネが……」と、その子がいったけど、

“My friend the fox — ” the little prince said to me.

「いいかい、ぼうや。もうキツネの話をしてるばあいじゃないんだ！」

“My dear little man, this is no longer a matter that has anything to do with the fox!”

「どうして？」

“Why not?”

「のどがからからで、もうすぐ死んじゃうんだよ……」

“Because I am about to die of thirst…”

その子は、ぼくのいいぶんがわからなくて、こういった。

He did not follow my reasoning, and he answered me:

「友だちになるっていいことなんだよ、死んじゃうにしても。ぼく、キツネと友だちになれてすっごくうれしくて……」

“It is a good thing to have had a friend, even if one is about to die. I, for instance, am very glad to have had a fox as a friend…”

ぼくはかんがえた。『この子、あぶないってことに気づいてない。はらぺこにも、からからにも、ぜったいならないんだ。ちょっとお日さまがあれば、それでじゅうぶん……』

“He has no way of guessing the danger,” I said to myself. “He has never been either hungry or thirsty. A little sunshine is all he needs…”

ところが、その子はぼくを見つめて、そのかんがえにへんじをしたんだ。

But he looked at me steadily, and replied to my thought:

「ぼくだって、のどはからからだよ……井戸いどをさがそう……」

“I am thirsty, too. Let us look for a well…”

ぼくは、だるそうにからだをうごかした。井戸をさがすなんて、ばかばかしい。はてもしれない、このさばくで。それなのに、そう、ぼくたちはあるきだした。

I made a gesture of weariness. It is absurd to look for a well, at random, in the immensity of the desert. But nevertheless we started walking.

ずーっと、だんまりあるいていくと、夜がおちて、星がぴかぴかしはじめた。ぼくは、とろんとしながら、星をながめた。のどがからからで、ぼうっとする。王子くんのことばがうかんでは、ぐるぐるまわる。

When we had trudged along for several hours, in silence, the darkness fell, and the stars began to come out. Thirst had made me a little feverish, and I looked at them as if I were in a dream. The little prince’s last words came reeling back into my memory:

「じゃあ、きみものどがからから？」と、ぼくはきいた。

“Then you are thirsty, too?” I demanded.
