I swear by Apollo Healer, by Asclepius, by Hygieia, by Panacea, and by all the gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will carry out, according to my ability and judgment, this oath and this indenture.

나는 의학의 신 그리고 건강과 모든 치유, 그리고 여신들의 이름에 걸고 나의 능력과 판단으로 다음을 맹세하노라 나는 이 선서와 계약을 지킬것이니,

To hold my teacher in this art equal to my own parents; to make him partner in my livelihood; when he is in need of money to share mine with him; to consider his family as my own brothers, and to teach them this art, if they want to learn it, without fee or indenture; to impart precept, oral instruction, and all other instruction to my own sons, the sons of my teacher, and to indentured pupils who have taken the Healer’s oath, but to nobody else.

나에게 이 의술을 가르쳐준 자를 나의 부모님으로 생각하겠으며, 나의 모든것을 그와 나누겠으며, 필요하다면 그의 일을 덜어주겠노라. 동등한 지위에 있을 그의 자손을 나의 형제처럼 여기겠으며 그들이 원한다면 조건이나 보수없이 그들에게 이 기술을 가르치겠노라. 교훈이나 강의 다른 모든 교육방법을 써서라도. 나는 이 지식을 나자신의 아들들에게, 그리고 나의 은사들에게, 그리고 의학의 법에 따라 규약과 맹세로 맺어진 제자들에게 전하겠노라. 그러나 그외의 누구에게도 이 지식을 전하지는 않겠노라.

I will use those dietary regimens which will benefit my patients according to my greatest ability and judgment, and I will do no harm or injustice to them.

나는 나의 능력과 판단에 따라 내가 환자의 이익이라 간주하는 섭생의 법칙을 지킬 것이며, 심신에 해를 주는 어떠한 것들도 멀리하겠노라

Neither will I administer a poison to anybody when asked to do so, nor will I suggest such a course. Similarly I will not give to a woman a pessary to cause abortion. But I will keep pure and holy both my life and my art.

나는 요청을 받는다 하더라도 극약을 그 누구에게도 주지 않을것이며 복중 태아를 가진 임신부에게도 그러할 것이다.

I will not use the knife, not even, verily, on sufferers from stone, but I will give place to such as are craftsmen therein.

나는 결석이라도 자르는 일은 하지 않을 것이며, 이러한 기술을 행하는 자(외과 의사)에 의해서 이루어지게 할 것이다.

Into whatsoever houses I enter, I will enter to help the sick, and I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm, especially from abusing the bodies of man or woman, bond or free.

내가 어떠한 집에 들어가더라도 나는 병자의 이익을 위해 그들에게 갈 것이며 어떠한 해악이나 부패스러운 행위를 멀리할 것이며, 남성 혹은 여성, 시민 혹은 노예의 유혹을 멀리할 것이다.

And whatsoever I shall see or hear in the course of my profession, as well as outside my profession in my intercourse with men, if it be what should not be published abroad, I will never divulge, holding such things to be holy secrets.

나의 전문적인 업무와 관련된 것이든 혹은 관련이 없는 것이든 나는 일생동안 결코 밖에서 말해서는 안되는 것을 보거나 들을 것이다. 나는 그와 같은 모든 것을 비밀로 지켜야 한다고 생각하기에, 결코 누설하지 않겠노라.

Now if I carry out this oath, and break it not, may I gain for ever reputation among all men for my life and for my art; but if I break it and forswear myself, may the opposite befall me.

내가 이 맹세를 깨트리지 않고 지낸다면, 그 어떤 때라도 모든 이에게 존경을 받으며, 즐겁게 의술을 펼칠 것이요 인생을 즐길 수 있을 것이다. 하나 내가 이 맹세의 길을 벗어나거나 어긴다면, 그 반대가 나의 몫이 될 것이다.
