1. The Way

1

The Way that can be experienced is not true;
The world that can be constructed is not true.
The Way manifests all that happens and may happen;
The world represents all that exists and may exist.
To experience without intention is to sense the world;
To experience with intention is to anticipate the world.
These two experiences are indistinguishable;
Their construction differs but their effect is the same.
Beyond the gate of experience flows the Way,
Which is ever greater and more subtle than the world.

Calea (Tao) care poate fi numita nu este Calea Ultima.
Numele dat Caii nu poate fi numele vesnic.
Fara nume este esenta Cerului si a Pamântului.
Dând Caii un nume este ceia ce creiaza toate lucrurile.
Cine n-are dorinte vede esenta lucrurilor.
Cine are dorinte vede doar manifestarea lor.
Amândoua aspecte au aceiasi sursa,
Dar devin diferite atunci când sunt percepute.
Asemanarea lor este in profunzimea profunzimilor
Unde este poarta prin care totul ia fiinta.

2. Abstraction

When beauty is abstracted
Then ugliness has been implied;
When good is abstracted
Then evil has been implied.
So alive and dead are abstracted from nature,
Difficult and easy abstracted from progress,
Long and short abstracted from contrast,
High and low abstracted from depth,
Song and speech abstracted from melody,
After and before abstracted from sequence.
The sage experiences without abstraction,
And accomplishes without action;
He accepts the ebb and flow of things,
Nurtures them, but does not own them,
And lives, but does not dwell.

Când binele este cunoscut ca bine,

Vocea se sprijina pe sunet,

Înteleptul astfel practica Non-actiunea
Si învata pe altii prin exemplu, nu prin vorbe.
Lucrurile în lume sunt toate într-o stare relativa.
Înteleptul stiind aceasta nu-si arata preferintele.
Priveste totul cu egala consideratie.
Creiaza merite dar nu si le însuseste.
El actioneaza optim, ia lucrurile asa cum sunt.
Le îndeplineste, dar ramâne mai presus de merite.
Astfel ca meritele ramâne cu el tot timpul.

3. Without Action

Not praising the worthy prevents contention,
Not esteeming the valuable prevents theft,
Not displaying the beautiful prevents desire.
In this manner the sage governs people:
Emptying their minds,
Filling their bellies,
Weakening their ambitions,
And strengthening their bones.
If people lack knowledge and desire
Then they can not act;
If no action is taken
Harmony remains.

Conducatorul se manifesta cu modestie,
Nu arata pozitii de putere,
Astfel ca oamenii nu se vor confrunta.
Nu pune pret pe lucruri,
Astfel ca oamenii nu vor fura.
Nu arata lucruri care pot fi dorite,
Astfel ca oamenii nu-si vor strica inimile.
Înteleptul conduce astfel oamenii
Tinandu-le inimile pure, dându-le mâncare,
Necreindu-le ambitii si întarindu-le sanatatea.
Astfel Inteleptul îi împiedica sa cunoasca raul,
Dorind mereu binele, cei cu ganduri rele nu pot actiona.
El conduce subtil, toti traiesc astfel în pace.

4. Limitless

The Way is a limitless vessel;
Used by the self, it is not filled by the world;
It cannot be cut, knotted, dimmed or stilled;
Its depths are hidden, ubiquitous and eternal;
I don’t know where it comes from;
It comes before nature.

Calea (Tao) este goala, folosinta-i nesfarsita.
Este adânca, pare originea tuturor lucrurilor.
Pare ca vesnic ramane fara capat.
Nu stiu cum a fost creiata,
Pare ca a existat chiar înainte de Creator.

5. Nature

Nature is not kind;
It treats all things impartially.
The Sage is not kind,
And treats all people impartially.
Nature is like a bellows,
Empty, yet never ceasing its supply.
The more it moves, the more it yields;
So the sage draws upon experience
And cannot be exhausted.

Natura n-are preferinte,
Considera totul cu egalitate.
Tot asa înteleptul n-are preferinte pentru nimeni,
Pentru el, toti sunt priviti în egala masura.
Universul este nesfârsit, în el se gaseste totul.
Cu cât misca mai mult, cu atât mai mult este produs.
Prea multa vorba duce la oboseala.
Mai bine se pastreaza calea de mijloc.

6. Experience

6

Experience is a riverbed,
Its source hidden, forever flowing:
Its entrance, the root of the world,
The Way moves within it:
Draw upon it; it will not run dry.

Spiritul nepatruns nu moare niciodata.
Se poate numi Mama tainica,
Care este poarta naturii, tot timpul în noi.
Folosita din plin niciodata nu se sfârseste.

7. Complete

Nature is complete because it does not serve itself.
The sage places himself after and finds himself before,
Ignores his desire and finds himself content.
He is complete because he does not serve himself.

Universul dainuieste etern
Pentru ca nu exista pentru sine.
Astfel si Înteleptul stand la urma, ajunge în frunte.
Se neglijeaja pe sine însusi, si ajunge sa fie ocrotit.
Nu traieste pentru sine, traieste astfel din plin.

8. Water

The best of man is like water,
Which benefits all things, and does not contend with them,
Which flows in places that others disdain,
Where it is in harmony with the Way.
So the sage:
Lives within nature,
Thinks within the deep,
Gives within impartiality,
Speaks within trust,
Governs within order,
Crafts within ability,
Acts within opportunity.
He does not contend, and none contend against him.

Virtutea este fluida ca apa.
Apa patrunde subtil peste tot.
Tot astfel virtutea biruieste fara efort.
Calea Tao este la fel.
Cel care cauta îsi gaseste locul.
Simtamintele creiaza o inima adanca.
Prietenia aduce bune relatii cu toti.
Vorba onesta creiaza încredere.
Cel ce conduce respecta regulile.
În afaceri corectitudinea este cautata
Timpul aseaza lucrurile.
Virtutea actioneaza astfel fara contradictii.

9. Retire

Fill a cup to its brim and it is easily spilled;
Temper a sword to its hardest and it is easily broken;
Amass the greatest treasure and it is easily stolen;
Claim credit and honour and you easily fall;
Retire once your purpose is achieved — this is natural.

Întinderea prea mare a corzii
Creiaza prea mare tensiune.
Ascutirea prea deasa a uneltei
O face curând de nefolosit.
Adunarea bogatiilor într-un loc
Curând face locul nesigur.
A fi mandru de bogatii si onoruri
Este cauza caderii în disgratie.
Înteleptul se retrage dupa îndeplinirea faptei.
Aceasta este Calea (Tao) a virtutii (Te).

10. Harmony

Embracing the Way, you become embraced;
Breathing gently, you become newborn;
Clearing your mind, you become clear;
Nurturing your children, you become impartial;
Opening your heart, you become accepted;
Accepting the world, you embrace the Way.
Bearing and nurturing,
Creating but not owning,
Giving without demanding,
This is harmony.

Putem oare sa ne unim sufletul
Si sa nu ne abatem de la Cale (Tao) ?
Putem sa avem o respiratie calma ca a unui copil ?
Putem oare purifica viziunea vietii,
Astfel ca ceia ce vedem sa straluceasca ?
Putem oare iubi si conduce oamenii
Cu subtilitatea Non-actiunii?
Ne putem oare conduce singuri
Si închide sau deschide posibilitati dupa voie ?
Putem oare invata sa avem access la totul
Prin puterea Caii (Tao) ?
Putem creia si hrani?
Putem sa ne eliberam de dorinta de a poseda ?
Putem face bine fara a dori ceva în schimb ?
Putem conduce fara a apasa ?
Cine poate face acestea a dobândit marea Virtute (Te).

11. Tools

11

Thirty spokes meet at a nave;
Because of the hole we may use the wheel.
Clay is moulded into a vessel;
Because of the hollow we may use the cup.
Walls are built around a hearth;
Because of the doors we may use the house.
Thus tools come from what exists,
But use from what does not.

Sunt 30 de spite în butucul rotii,
Dar folosirea lui depinde de golul din centru.
Vasul facut din huma este util
Prin golul creiat de forma lui.
Casa cu ziduri, ferestre si usi
Este utila prin golul creiat de acestea.
Desi pretuim ceia ce exista, ne folosim de ceia ce nu exista.

12. Substance

Too much colour blinds the eye,
Too much music deafens the ear,
Too much taste dulls the palate,
Too much play maddens the mind,
Too much desire tears the heart.
In this manner the sage cares for people:
He provides for the belly, not for the senses;
He ignores abstraction and holds fast to substance.

Culorile îl orbesc pe om, sunetele îl asurzesc.
Gusturile îi slabesc simtul gustului.
Alergatul la vanatoare îl salbaticesc.
Ceia ce se obtine greu îi îngreuneaza manifestarea.
Astfel ca Înteleptul se detaseaza de simturi
Si traieste în lumea lui interioara.

13. Self

13

Both praise and blame cause concern,
For they bring people hope and fear.
The object of hope and fear is the self -
For, without self, to whom may fortune and disaster occur?
Therefore,
Who distinguishes himself from the world may be given the world,
But who regards himself as the world may accept the world.

Atât norocul cât si nesansa creiaza frica.
Gândul bun sau gândul rau, dualitatea
Care exista tot timpul în mintea încordata.
Cum pot norocul sau nesansa sa creieze neliniste ?
Cel norocos îsi asteapta câstigul cu nerabdare.
Iar cel nenorocos este nelinistit pentru ce a pierdut.
Cum pot gândul bun sau cel rau
Sa existe în mintea incordata ?
Este pentru ca avem un Ego.
Daca n-am acorda Ego-ului importanta
Si încordarea mintii s-ar diminua.
Astfel ca cel care îi considera pe altii
Ca si cum ar fi el însusi
Este demn de a conduce.
Celui care-i iubeste pe altii cum se iubeste pe el însusi
I se poate acorda încredere.

14. Mystery

14

Looked at but cannot be seen — it is beneath form;
Listened to but cannot be heard — it is beneath sound;
Held but cannot be touched — it is beneath feeling;
These depthless things evade definition,
And blend into a single mystery.
In its rising there is no light,
In its falling there is no darkness,
A continuous thread beyond description,
Lining what can not occur;
Its form formless,
Its image nothing,
Its name silence;
Follow it, it has no back,
Meet it, it has no face.
Attend the present to deal with the past;
Thus you grasp the continuity of the Way,
Which is its essence.

Privind Calea Tao, nu poate fi vazuta.
Încercand s-o ascultam, nu poate fi auzita.
Dorind s-o simtim, nu poate fi atinsa.
Aceste trei însusiri nu pot fi definite.
Calea Tao nu poate fi astfel perceputa.
Are ca esenta Golul, este forma fara de forma,
Nu poate fi perceputa cu simturile.
Infinitul si Eternul nu se pot explica
Întâlnind Calea Tao nu-i poti vede începutul,
Urmând Calea Tao nu-i poti vede sfarsitul.
Cunoscând cum s-a manifestat Calea Tao în trecut,
Se poate intui prezentul.
A trai prezentul ca oglinda a trecutului,
Aceasta înseamna a fi pe Cararea Tao.

15. Enlightenment

15

The enlightened possess understanding
So profound they can not be understood.
Because they cannot be understood
I can only describe their appearance:
Cautious as one crossing thin ice,
Undecided as one surrounded by danger,
Modest as one who is a guest,
Unbounded as melting ice,
Genuine as unshaped wood,
Broad as a valley,
Seamless as muddy water.
Who stills the water that the mud may settle,
Who seeks to stop that he may travel on,
Who desires less than may transpire,
Decays, but will not renew.

În trecul cei care urmau Calea Tao
Erau asa profunzi, ca greu puteau fi întelesi.

Ca unul care trece un râu iarna.

16. Decay and Renewal

16

Empty the self completely;
Embrace perfect peace.
The world will rise and move;
Watch it return to rest.
All the flourishing things
Will return to their source.
This return is peaceful;
It is the flow of nature,
An eternal decay and renewal.
Accepting this brings enlightenment,
Ignoring this brings misery.
Who accepts nature’s flow becomes all-cherishing;
Being all-cherishing he becomes impartial;
Being impartial he becomes magnanimous;
Being magnanimous he becomes natural;
Being natural he becomes one with the Way;
Being one with the Way he becomes immortal:
Though his body will decay, the Way will not.

Fiind fara de dorinte, se atinge linistea.
Pentru tot ce capata existenta,
Este un timp de absorbtie în non-existenta.
Dupa o viguroasa crestere,
Orice dispare, întorcându-se astfel la sursa.
Întorcerea la origini este linistea,
Repaosul este conditia naturala.
Întoarcerea la origini este eternitatea,
Cel ce stie aceasta este iluminat.
Cel ce nu stie are parte de suferinta.
Cunoscând eternitatea se contopeste cu totul.

17. Rulers

17

The best rulers are scarcely known by their subjects;
The next best are loved and praised;
The next are feared;
The next despised:
They have no faith in their people,
And their people become unfaithful to them.
When the best rulers achieve their purpose
Their subjects claim the achievement as their own.

Cei mai buni conducatori trec neobservati.
Altii pot fi iubiti si laudati,
De altii oamenii se tem, altii sunt urâti.
Atunci când lipseste încrederea conducatorilor in oameni,
Nici oamenii nu pot avea încredere în conducatori.
Cuvintele sunt totdeauna mai prejos de fapte.

18. Hypocrisy

When the Way is forgotten
Duty and justice appear;
Then knowledge and wisdom are born
Along with hypocrisy.
When harmonious relationships dissolve
Then respect and devotion arise;
When a nation falls to chaos
Then loyalty and patriotism are born.

Atunci când Calea Tao este pierduta,
Apar multitudinea de reguli si legi.
Când Ego-ul se manifesta în oameni,
Se da nastere la multa hipocrizie.
Când relatiile de familie slabesc,
Se face mult caz de aceste legaturi.
Cand o natiune este intr-o stare de confuzie,
Tara produce multimea de patrioti.
Fiind pe Calea Tao lucrurile sunt in echilibru,
Fara Tao apar toate diferentele.

19. Simplify

19

If we could abolish knowledge and wisdom
Then people would profit a hundredfold;
If we could abolish duty and justice
Then harmonious relationships would form;
If we could abolish artifice and profit
Then waste and theft would disappear.
Yet such remedies treat only symptoms
And so they are inadequate.
People need personal remedies:
Reveal your naked self and embrace your original nature;
Bind your self-interest and control your ambition;
Forget your habits and simplify your affairs.

Mergând pe Calea Tao si abandonând învatatura omeneasca,
Problemele izvorâte din morala vor dispare.
Abandonând dreptatea facuta de legi si reguli,
Dreptatea adevarata apare natural.
Abandonând profitul si lucrurile scumpe,
Societatea va scapa de hoti si tâlhari.
Renuntând la aceste trei lucruri,
Se obtine simplitatea, naturaletea si abundenta.

20. Wandering

20

What is the difference between assent and denial?
What is the difference between beautiful and ugly?
What is the difference between fearsome and afraid?
The people are merry as if at a magnificent party
Or playing in the park at springtime,
But I am tranquil and wandering,
Like a newborn before it learns to smile,
Alone, with no true home.
The people have enough and to spare,
Where I have nothing,
And my heart is foolish,
Muddled and cloudy.
The people are bright and certain,
Where I am dim and confused;
The people are clever and wise,
Where I am dull and ignorant;
Aimless as a wave drifting over the sea,
Attached to nothing.
The people are busy with purpose,
Where I am impractical and rough;
I do not share the peoples’ cares
But I am fed at nature’s breast.

Renuntând la cauza durerii, durerea înceteaza.
Fie ca spui „Da” sau „Nu” este tot o relativitate.
Fie ca ceva este considerat „Bun” sau „Rau”,
Starea lor relativa ramâne.
Daca altii se tem de ceva,
Este oare îndreptatit sa ne temem si noi ?
Realitatea poate fi cu totul alta.
Oamenii lumii vor continua sa se casatoreasca,
Sa faca sarbatori si petreceri.
Urmând Calea Tao eu sunt fara de dorinti,
Ca un prunc care nu stie nici macar sa se bucure.
Fara certitudini, fara nimic al meu.
Oamenii lumii doresc sa aiba lucruri,
Eu n-am nimic, pot fi numit nebun.
Alti oameni par ca stiu multe,
Eu par simplu si nu atrag pe nimeni.
Pentru alti oameni deosebirile sunt clare,
Numai eu vad totul ca întreg.
Par fara tel, ca valul marii dus,
Batut de vânt, par ca ajung niciunde.
Alti oameni au un tel, doar eu nu vad niciunul.
Sunt diferit de altii pentru ca sunt pe Calea Tao.

21. Accept

21

Harmony is only in following the Way.
The Way is without form or quality,
But expresses all forms and qualities;
The Way is hidden and implicate,
But expresses all of nature;
The Way is unchanging,
But expresses all motion.
Beneath sensation and memory
The Way is the source of all the world.
How can I understand the source of the world?
By accepting.

Virtutea (Te) urmeaza Calea (Tao).
Calea Tao nu se poate vede sau atinge.
Desi nevazuta si de neatins, contine totusi forme.
Nevazuta si de neatins, are totusi consistenta.
Subtila si ascunsa, are totusi esenta.
Esenta sa este eterna, dintotdeauna a existat,

22. Home

22

Accept and you become whole,
Bend and you straighten,
Empty and you fill,
Decay and you renew,
Want and you acquire,
Fulfill and you become confused.
The sage accepts the world
As the world accepts the Way;
He does not display himself, so is clearly seen,
Does not justify himself, so is recognized,
Does not boast, so is credited,
Does not pride himself, so endures,
Does not contend, so none contend against him.
The ancients said, “Accept and you become whole”,
Once whole, the world is as your home.

Ce-i aplecat, se va ridica.
Ceia ce este strâmb, se poate îndrepta.
Golul atrage plinul.
Sfârsit va fi reânoit.
Cel ce are putin va avea mult.
Cel ce are mult va pierde.
Cel Întelept sta pe Calea Tao,
Astfel ca este un model de urmat.
Nu este mândru, de aceia straluceste.
Nu se preamareste pe sine, de aceia este apreciat.
Nu se lauda, de aceia acumuleaza merit.
Nu se pune mai presus de toti,
De aceia este privit cu respect.
Nu este la concurenta cu nimeni,
De aceia nimeni nu-i poate râvni locul.
Din vechime se spune sa fim modesti,
Astfel ca integritatea nu se stirbeste.
Cel integru este cel care calatoreste pe Calea Tao.

23. Words

23

Nature says only a few words:
High wind does not last long,
Nor does heavy rain.
If nature’s words do not last
Why should those of man?
Who accepts harmony, becomes harmonious.
Who accepts loss, becomes lost.
For who accepts harmony, the Way harmonizes with him,
And who accepts loss, the Way cannot find.

Vorbind putin ramânem în repaos.
Vântul, furtuna trec, cum tot ce e-n natura-i trecator,
Asa si omul trece.
Dar cel ce urmeaza Calea Tao se identifica cu Tao.
Cel ce urmeaza Virtutea (Te) se identifica cu Virtutea.
Cei ce se pierd sunt una cu perzarea.
Cei ce nu cred, nici ei nu sunt crezuti.

24. Indulgence

24

Straighten yourself and you will not stand steady;
Display yourself and you will not be clearly seen;
Justify yourself and you will not be respected;
Promote yourself and you will not be believed;
Pride yourself and you will not endure.
These behaviours are wasteful, indulgent,
And so they attract disfavour;
Harmony avoids them.

Stând pe degetele picioarelor, postura-i instabila.
Cu picioarele încrucisate, nu se poate merge.
Cel ce isi da marire, nu are stralucire.
Cine se preamareste, nu este apreciat.
Cel ce se lauda, nu are merit.
Cel încrezut, nu este respectat.
Cel ce urmeaza Calea Tao îi evita pe acestia toti.

25. Beneath Abstraction

25

There is a mystery,
Beneath abstraction,
Silent, depthless,
Alone, unchanging,
Ubiquitous and liquid,
The mother of nature.
It has no name, but I call it “the Way”;
It has no limit, but I call it “limitless”.
Being limitless, it flows away forever;
Flowing away forever, it returns to my self:
The Way is limitless,
So nature is limitless,
So the world is limitless,
And so I am limitless.
For I am abstracted from the world,
The world from nature,
Nature from the Way,
And the Way from what is beneath abstraction.

Înainte de existenta Cerului si a Pamântului,
Era ceva fara început si fara de sfârsit.
Neschimbat exista prin sine însusi.
Acest ceva umplea totul, era nesfârsit.
Poate fi considerat ca sursa universului.
Nu-l pot numi, silit sa-i dau un nume,
Îl numesc Tao, îl cred ca fiind suprem.
Suprem înseamna fara de sfârsit,

26. Calm

26

Gravity is the source of lightness,
Calm, the master of haste.
A lone traveller will journey all day, watching over his belongings;
Yet once safe in his bed he will lose them in sleep.
The captain of a great vessel will not act lightly or hastily.
Acting lightly, he loses sight of the world,
Acting hastily, he loses control of himself.
A captain can not treat his great ship as a small boat;
Rather than glitter like jade
He must stand like stone.

Ceia ce este usor este deasupra greului.
Calmul este deasupra agitatiei.
Înteleptul se elibereaza de greu si agitatie.
În mijlocul lumii frematând el ramane în repaos.
Conducatorul nu este superficial sau frivol.

27. Perfection

27

The perfect traveller leaves no trail to be followed;
The perfect speaker leaves no question to be answered;
The perfect accountant leaves no working to be completed;
The perfect container leaves no lock to be closed;
The perfect knot leaves no end to be ravelled.
So the sage nurtures all men
And abandons no one.
He accepts everything
And rejects nothing.
He attends to the smallest details.
So the strong must guide the weak,
For the weak are raw material to the strong.
If the guide is not respected,
Or the material is not cared for,
Confusion will result, no matter how clever one is.
This is the secret of perfection:
When raw wood is carved, it becomes a tool;
When a man is employed, he becomes a tool;
The perfect carpenter leaves no wood to be carved.

Bunul calator nu lasa urme.

Cei ce nu pretuiesc pe Întelept si-a lui învatatura,
Traiesc himere, amarnic se înseala,
Desi poate au educatie aleasa.
Dar Înteleptul e subtil în tot ce face.

28. Becoming

28

Using the male, being female,
Being the entrance of the world,
You embrace harmony
And become as a newborn.
Using strength, being weak,
Being the root of the world,
You complete harmony
And become as unshaped wood.
Using the light, being dark,
Being the world,
You perfect harmony
And return to the Way.

Cel ce îsi stie forta si ramâne slab,
E pe Cararea Tao, simte ca-i copil.
Cel ce se stie erudit si-si tine simplitatea,
Este exemplul bun.
Model fiind, e vesnic pe Cararea Tao.
Cel ce atinge gloria si ramâne modest are Virtute (Te),
Atingând plinatatea vine din nou la sursa de unde toate au iesit.
Cel Întelept e astfel într-o continua armonie,
Se scalda în lumina, se afla în repaos.
Fiind în repaos atinge infinitul.

29. Ambition

29

Those who wish to change the world
According with their desire
Cannot succeed.
The world is shaped by the Way;
It cannot be shaped by the self.
Trying to change it, you damage it;
Trying to possess it, you lose it.
So some will lead, while others follow.
Some will be warm, others cold
Some will be strong, others weak.
Some will get where they are going
While others fall by the side of the road.
So the sage will be neither wasteful nor violent.

Cel care doreste sa stapâneasca lumea,
Dându-i amprenta sa, nu poate reusi.
Caci lumea este sacra, nu poate fi schimbata permanent.
Fiind siguri de ceva, putem oricând sa pierdem.
La drum, unii-s în fata, altii-n spate,
Unii respira greu, altii usor,
Unii sunt tari, altii mai slabi,
Unii umbla în car, altii pe jos.
Cel Întelept pastreaza calea de mijloc,
În armonie nu exagereaza, nici nu leneveste
Nici cu corpu-i nici cu mintea-i.

30. Violence

30

Powerful men are well advised not to use violence,
For violence has a habit of returning;
Thorns and weeds grow wherever an army goes,
And lean years follow a great war.
A general is well advised
To achieve nothing more than his orders:
Not to take advantage of his victory.
Nor to glory, boast or pride himself;
To do what is dictated by necessity,
But not by choice.
For even the strongest force will weaken with time,
And then its violence will return, and kill it.

Conducatorul ce urmeaza Calea Tao,
Nu recurge la forta pentru a cuceri.
Caci stie ca-n atac riposta va primi.
Distrugeri mari urmeaza si foamete si boli.
Cel luminat nu recurge la forta pentru a-si creia glorie.
Îsi conduce treburile fara a ofensa pe nimeni.
Si nu recurge la lupta decat fortat de aparare.
Astfel el nu tulbura armonia.
Cel ce foloseste forta nu este pe Cararea Tao,
Iar cel ce nu este pe Carare va pieri.

31. Armies

31

Armies are tools of violence;
They cause men to hate and fear.
The sage will not join them.
His purpose is creation;
Their purpose is destruction.
Weapons are tools of violence,
Not of the sage;
He uses them only when there is no choice,
And then calmly, and with tact,
For he finds no beauty in them.
Whoever finds beauty in weapons
Delights in the slaughter of men;
And who delights in slaughter
Cannot content himself with peace.
So slaughters must be mourned
And conquest celebrated with a funeral.

Armele aduc nenorociri.
Cel ce urmeaza Calea Tao le detesta.
Nu le foloseste decât constrâns de necesitate.
Chiar si atunci le foloseste cu retinere.
Liderul Întelept chiar si când invinge,
Nu se bucura de victoria lui,
Nu se bucura de uciderea adversarilor.
Intra în batalie mâhnit ca trebuie s-o faca.
Caci victoria nu este celebrare ci funeralii.
Cel ce se bucura de ucideri si crime,
Nu este pe Calea Tao.

32. Shapes

32

The Way has no true shape,
And therefore none can control it.
If a ruler could control the Way
All things would follow
In harmony with his desire,
And sweet rain would fall,
Effortlessly slaking every thirst.
The Way is shaped by use,
But then the shape is lost.
Do not hold fast to shapes
But let sensation flow into the world
As a river courses down to the sea.

Calea Tao este prea subtila pentru a fi definita.
Manifestându-se capata un nume.
Când un Conducator urmeaza Calea Tao
Este urmat onest de cei supusi
Si pacea va dainui in regat.
Înteleptul care cunoaste Calea îsi stie limitele,
Cel ce-si cunoaste limitele este pe Carare.
Tao întrepatrunde totul, toate fiintele se intorc in Tao,
Cel Întelept stiind aceasta aplica Tao în tot ce face.

33. Virtues

33

Who understands the world is learned;
Who understands the self is enlightened.
Who conquers the world has strength;
Who conquers the self has harmony.
Who is determined has purpose;
Who is contented has wealth.
Who defends his home may long endure;
Who surrenders his home may long survive it.

Cunoscându-i pe altii este întelepciune,
Cunoscându-se pe sine însusi este iluminare.
Învingând un adversar este tarie,
Învingându-se pe sine însusi este cu adevarat putere.
Multumit cu ce are Înteleptul este bogat,
Cel perseverent ajunge la îndeplinirea scopului.
Cel care nu-si pierde tinta se mentine.
Chiar si dupa moartea fizica
Puterea celui Întelept produce efecte pozitive.
Astfel el traieste în eternitate.

34. Control

34

The Way flows and ebbs, creating and destroying,
Implementing all the world, attending to the tiniest details,
Claiming nothing in return.
It nurtures all things,
Though it does not control them;
It has no intention,
So it seems inconsequential.
It is the substance of all things;
Though it does not control them;
It has no exception,
So it seems all-important.
The sage would not control the world;
He is in harmony with the world.

Tao cuprinde tot universul,
Toate lucrurile îsi au izvorul în Tao.
Nu respinge pe nimeni si nimic.
Cel pe Carare e creator, dar nu-si însuseste ceia ce creiaza.
E generos, dar nu profita de recunostiinta altora.
Fara dorinte proprii trece nebagat in seama.
Înfaptuieste lucruri bune, dar nu-si atribuie merite.
Nemanifestându-si marirea Înteleptul este cu adevarat maret.

35. Peace

35

If you offer music and food
Strangers may stop with you;
But if you accord with the Way
All the people of the world will keep you
In safety, health, community, and peace.
The Way lacks art and flavour;
It can neither be seen nor heard,
But its benefit cannot be exhausted.

Fiind pe Cararea Tao toate fiintele
Se indreapta catre calea fireasca.
Pe Cale sunt armonia, sanatatea, pacea si fericirea.
Cel ce gusta din dulceata-i va vrea sa ramâna.
Dar Calea este cu mult mai profunda,
Transcende gustul, nu poate fi vazuta,
Auzita, simtita sau cuprinsa.

36. Opposition

36

To reduce someone’s influence, first expand it;
To reduce someone’s force, first increase it;
To overthrow someone, first exalt them;
To take from someone, first give to them.
This is the subtlety by which the weak overcome the strong:
Fish should not leave their depths,
And swords should not leave their scabbards.

Liderul Întelept cunoaste aceasta.
Ceva se contracta pentru ca era dilatat.
Ceva slabeste pentru ca era tare.
Ceva se înalta pentru ca era jos.
Cineva primeaste pentru ca a dat.
Aceasta-i întelepciune.
Subtilul e mai presus de grosier.
Asa cum pestele nu trebuie sa iasa din apa
Tot asa Liderul Întelept nu face caz de forta.
Prin simplitate se aduce pacea,
Încredeare aduce armonie.

37. Tranquillity

37

The Way takes no action, but leaves nothing undone.
When you accept this
The world will flourish,
In harmony with nature.
Nature does not possess desire;
Without desire, the heart becomes quiet;
In this manner the whole world is made tranquil.

Cararea Tao pare inactiva, dar totul este îndeplinit.
De-ar fi urmata de conducatori,
Lumea s-ar indrepta prin ea insasi.
Cautând solutii la multele probleme,
Simplitatea este de urmat.
Simplitatea evita înmultirea dorintelor.
Dorintele putine aduc linistea.
Fara multe dorinte lumea se armonizeaza prin ea însasi.

38. Ritual

38

Well established hierarchies are not easily uprooted;
Closely held beliefs are not easily released;
So ritual enthralls generation after generation.
Harmony does not care for harmony, and so is naturally attained;
But ritual is intent upon harmony, and so can not attain it.
Harmony neither acts nor reasons;
Love acts, but without reason;
Justice acts to serve reason;
But ritual acts to enforce reason.
When the Way is lost, there remains harmony;
When harmony is lost, there remains love;
When love is lost, there remains justice;
But when justice is lost, there remains ritual.
Ritual is the end of compassion and honesty,
The beginning of confusion;
Belief is a colourful hope or fear,
The beginning of folly.
The sage goes by harmony, not by hope;
He dwells in the fruit, not the flower;
He accepts substance, and ignores abstraction.

Înteleptul nu-si afiseaza virtutea si de aceia este virtuos.
Omul obisnuit îsi afiseaza virtutea si de aceia este slab.
Virtutea superioara nu intervine deschis,
Lucrurile sunt astfel duse la bun sfarsit.
Virtutea inferioara totdeauna se manifesta,
Iar lucrurile ramân neterminate.
Bunatatea Înteleptului nu are un motiv în sine,
Astfel ca treptat oamenii îl urmeaza.
Urmând Calea Tao apare si Virtutea (Te).
Cand virtutea dispare apare bunavoita,
Cand bunavointa dispare apare compasiunea,
Cand compasiunea dispare urmeaza regulile.
Prin reguli sinceritatea si încrederea dispar.
Astfel apar confuzia si distorsiunea evenimentelor.
Înteleptul vede si adancul nu numai suprafata.
Vede fructul potential în floare.
Astfel prin virtutea sa vede realitatea
În locul manifestarilor trecatoare.

39. Support

39

In mythical times all things were whole:
All the sky was clear,
All the earth was stable,
All the mountains were firm,
All the riverbeds were full,
All of nature was fertile,
And all the rulers were supported.
But, losing clarity, the sky tore;
Losing stability, the earth split;
Losing strength, the mountains sank;
Losing water, the riverbeds cracked;
Losing fertility, nature disappeared;
And losing support, the rulers fell.
Rulers depend upon their subjects,
The noble depend upon the humble;
So rulers call themselves orphaned, hungry and alone,
To win the people’s support.

Fiind în armonie cu Calea Tao
Cerul si-a dobândit claritatea.
Prin armonie Pamantul a devenit stabil.
Prin armonie lucrurile au fost treptat creiate.
Fara Calea Tao omul se departeaza de Cer,
Fara Calea Tao îsi pierde stabilitatea pe Pamant.
Cand echilibrul dispare si omul dispare.
Înteleptul vede totul într-un echilibru,
Este modest, nu intervine.
El lasa Calea Tao sa se manifeste
Unindu-se cu Calea Tao intra în armonie.

40. Motion and Use

40

The motion of the Way is to return;
The use of the Way is to accept;
All things come from the Way,
And the Way comes from nothing.

Miscarea eterna Tao e întoarcerea la sursa
Pornind de jos e felul etern de a incepe.
Toate lucrurile apar din manifestare (fiinta),
Manifestarea izvoraste din nemanifestare (nefiinta).

41. Following

41

When the great man learns the Way, he follows it with diligence;
When the common man learns the Way, he follows it on occasion;
When the mean man learns the Way, he laughs out loud;
Those who do not laugh, do not learn at all.
Therefore it is said:
Who understands the Way seems foolish;
Who progresses on the Way seems to fail;
Who follows the Way seems to wander.
For the finest harmony appears plain;
The brightest truth appears coloured;
The richest character appears incomplete;
The bravest heart appears meek;
The simplest nature appears inconstant.
The square, perfected, has no corner;
Music, perfected, has no melody;
Love, perfected, has no climax;
Art, perfected, has no meaning.
The Way can be neither sensed nor known:
It transmits sensation and transcends knowledge.

Atunci cand Înteleptul aude despre Calea Tao
Nu intarzie sa o urmeze.
Cel mediocru cand urmeaza cand se lasa.
Ignorantul cand aude de Calea Tao se amuza prosteste.
Fiind ignorant, de nu s-ar amuza Calea n-ar fi Calea Tao.
De aceia se spune:
„Cei ignoranti fac haz de cel iluminat,
Considera sfatul bun fara utilitate,
Calea valoroasa le pare neânsemnata”.
Cel Întelept pare gol ca o vale.
Virtutea pura pare a fi fara miez.
Preaplinului extins fiind, i se vad cu greu marginile.
Ceia ce-i simplu pare fara consistenta.
Exista o cale a perfectiunii.
Universul nu se opreste într-un punct.
Cunoasterea necesita timp de a se acumula.
Muzica se învata tintind catre subtil.
Calea Tao nu poate fi cuprinsa
În manifestare aduce implinire
Celui ce-o urmeaza pentru a se perfectiona.

42. Mind

42

The Way bears sensation,
Sensation bears memory,
Sensation and memory bear abstraction,
And abstraction bears all the world;
Each thing in the world bears feeling and doing,
And, imbued with mind, harmony with the Way.
As others have taught, so do I teach,
“Who loses harmony opposes nature”;
This is the root of my teaching.

Calea Tao s-a manifestat la inceputuri.
Acea manifestare a devenit cauza altei manifestari.
Aceasta la randul ei a produs o alta.
Asa au aparut toate lucrurile.
Perechea de contrarii Yin si Yang au aparut,
Energia (Ch'i) le-a pus în miscare.
Armonia astfel s-a stabilit.
Oamenii obisnuiti sunt dependenti,
Doar Înteleptul este multumit cu sine insusi.
Traind prin sine însusi se aliniaza armoniei Caii Tao.

43. Overcoming

43

Water overcomes the stone;
Without substance it requires no opening;
This is the benefit of taking no action.
Yet benefit without action,
And experience without abstraction,
Are practiced by very few.

Observand curgerea lucrurilor, usorul va depasi greul,
Ceia ce n-a venit inca, va inlocui ceia ce este,
Non-actiunea este astfel superioara actiunii.
Putini sunt in lume care pot instrui fara cuvinte.
Aceasta este calea Înteleptului.

44. Contentment

44

Health or reputation: which is held dearer?
Health or possessions: which has more worth?
Profit or loss: which is more troublesome?
Great love incurs great expense,
And great riches incur great fear,
But contentment comes at no cost;
Who knows when to stop
Does not continue into danger,
And so may long endure.

Între glorie si sanatate ce este mai important?
Între bogatie si fericire ce este mai pretios?
A alerga dupa castiguri e pierdere sigura.
Daca fericirea ar veni cu bogatia,
Ar fi multi oameni fericiti, dar ei nu sunt.
Cel multumit cu ce are, evita injosirea.
Cel ce stie sa se opreasca la timp, nu intra în pericol.
Astfel Înteleptul dainuieste.

45. Quiet

45

Great perfection seems incomplete,
But does not decay;
Great abundance seems empty,
But does not fail.
Great truth seems contradictory;
Great cleverness seems stupid;
Great eloquence seems awkward.
As spring overcomes the cold,
And autumn overcomes the heat,
So calm and quiet overcome the world.

Perfectiunea nu are capat, oricat ar fi de-nalta,
Ceva mai poate fi adaugat.
Folosu-i e astfel din ce în ce mai bun.
Nemarginirea oricat ar fi de mare, ceva mai poate fi adaugat.
Si folosinta-i din ce în ce mai multa.
Ceva oricat de drept ar fi, mai poate fi-ntreptat.
Maiestria de a face ceva, poate înca sa creasca.
Oratoria maestrului poate fi înca mai buna.
Ce este în miscare poate fi îmbunatatit.
Doar nemiscarea este completa-n toate,
Ea e suportul, modelul a orice, conduce totul.

46. Horses

46

When a nation follows the Way,
Horses bear manure through its fields;
When a nation ignores the Way,
Horses bear soldiers through its streets.
There is no greater mistake than following desire;
There is no greater disaster than forgetting contentment;
There is no greater sickness than seeking attainment;
But one who is content to satisfy his needs
Finds that contentment endures.

Când oamenii urmeaza Calea Tao,
Caii comunitatii sunt pe ogor la munca.
Când oamenii nu urmeaza Calea Tao,
Caii comunitatii sunt pregatiti de lupta.
Campul ramane astfel nelucrat.
Nu este eroare mai mare, decat dorintele desarte.
Nu este mai mare suferinta decat lipsa de multumire.
Nu este mai mare calamitate decat lacomia.
Caci celui ce-si limiteaza dorintele, nimic nu îi lipseste.
Ogoru-i cultivat, e multumit cu tot ce are.

47. Knowing

47

Without taking a step outdoors
You know the whole world;
Without taking a peep out the window
You know the colour of the sky.
The more you experience,
The less you know.
The sage wanders without knowing,
Sees without looking,
Accomplishes without acting.

Cunoasterea trebuie sa vina din interior.
Mintea omului poate lua forme variate.
Fara a merge-n lume, lumea se cunoaste.
Fara a privi pe fereastra, cerul poate fi cunoscut.
Cu cat ne departam mai mult,
Cu atât cunoastem mai putin.
Înteleptul ajunge la destinatie fara sa porneasca,
Vede lumina fara a privi.
Întelege fara a cerceta, îndeplineste toate în repaosfiind.

48. Inaction

48

The follower of knowledge learns as much as he can every day;
The follower of the Way forgets as much as he can every day.
By attrition he reaches a state of inaction
Wherein he does nothing, but nothing remains undone.
To conquer the world, accomplish nothing;
If you must accomplish something,
The world remains beyond conquest.

Mergând pe calea lumii lucrurile se acumuleaza,
Mergând pe Calea Tao lucrurile se înputineaza.
Prin înputinare se ajunge la nimic, la sursa.
Prin miscare lucrurile sunt scoase din starea lor fireasca.
Efortul-i necesar de a le echilibra.
Pe Calea Tao lucrurile sunt deja în echlibru.
Actiunea nu este astfel necesara.

49. People

49

The sage does not distinguish between himself and the world;
The needs of other people are as his own.
He is good to those who are good;
He is also good to those who are not good,
Thereby he is good.
He trusts those who are trustworthy;
He also trusts those who are not trustworthy,
Thereby he is trustworthy.
The sage lives in harmony with the world,
And his mind is the world’s mind.
So he nurtures the worlds of others
As a mother does her children.

Înteleptul nu are Ego, se identifica cu universul.
Este bun si cu cei buni si cu cei rai.
Caci virtutea-i este bunatatea.
Este onest cu cei onesti si cu cei neonesti.
Caci virtutea-i este onestitatea.
El trateaza pe toti cu aceiasi impartialitate.
Traieste simplu si în armonie.
Pe toti îi priveste ca o mama pe copii.
În inima lui încape intreaga lume.

50. Death

50

Men flow into life, and ebb into death.
Some are filled with life;
Some are empty with death;
Some hold fast to life, and thereby perish,
For life is an abstraction.
Those who are filled with life
Need not fear tigers and rhinos in the wilds,
Nor wear armour and shields in battle;
The rhinoceros finds no place in them for its horn,
The tiger no place for its claw,
The soldier no place for a weapon,
For death finds no place in them.

Venind în lume este iesirea din Tao,
La moarte este intrarea în Tao, în repaos.
Înteleptul stiind aceasta nu tulbura armonia.
Asteapta sa inteleaga ce se arata a urma,
Aratându-se lumina este pe Calea Tao.
Toate pericolele sunt astfel evitate.
El aste astfel tot timpul în repaos.
Desi traieste-n lume e pe Cale,
Moartea-i nu-i decat o continuare.
