51. Nurture

장 제51

The Way bears all things;
Harmony nurtures them;
Nature shapes them;
Use completes them.
Each follows the Way and honours harmony,
Not by law,
But by being.
The Way bears, nurtures, shapes, completes,
Shelters, comforts, and makes a home for them.
Bearing without possessing,
Nurturing without taming,
Shaping without forcing,
This is harmony.

도는 낳고, 덕은 기르니,
사물의 모양이 잡히고, 힘의 흐름이 생긴다.
그러므로 만물은 도를 살피고 덕을 귀히 여기지 않는 것이 없다.
도를 높이고 덕을 귀히 여기는 것은,
누가 시키지 않아도 자연히 그러한 것이다.
그러므로 도는 낳고, 덕은 기르니,
기르고 보살피고,
이루고 성숙시키고,
돌보고 덮어준다.
낳되 소유하지 않으며,
위하되 뻐기지 않으며,
기르되 간섭하지 않으니,
이를 그윽한 덕이라 부른다.

52. Clarity

장 제52

The origin of the world is its mother;
Understand the mother, and you understand the child;
Embrace the child, and you embrace the mother,
Who will not perish when you die.
Reserve your judgments and words
And you maintain your influence;
Speak your mind and take positions
And nothing can save you.
As observing detail is clarity,
So maintaining flexibility is strength;
Use the light but shed no light,
So that you do yourself no harm,
But embrace clarity.

천하에는 시작이 있으니 이를 천하의 어미라 한다.
이미 그 어미를 얻었으니, 그 자식을 알고,
이미 그 자식을 알기에, 다시 그 어미를 지킬 수 있어,
죽을때까지 위태롭지 않다.
구멍을 막고 문을 닫으면, 평생 다함이 없으나,
구멍을 열고 일을 이루려들면, 끝내 이루지 못한다.
작은 것을 보는 것을 밝다고 하며, 부드러움을 지키는 것을 강하다고 한다.
그 빛을 쓰고 그 밝음으로 다시 돌아가면, 몸에 재앙이 남지 않으니,
이를 오래감을 익히는 것이라 부른다.

53. Difficult Paths

장 제53

With but a small understanding
One may follow the Way like a main road,
Fearing only to leave it;
Following a main road is easy,
Yet people delight in difficult paths.
When palaces are kept up
Fields are left to weeds
And granaries empty;
Wearing fine clothes,
Bearing sharp swords,
Glutting with food and drink,
Hoarding wealth and possessions —
These are the ways of theft,
And far from the Way.

나로 하여금 조그만 알음이 있다면
큰 도에 따르고 단지 흔들릴까 두려워한다.
큰 도는 매우 넓지만 사람들은
질러가기를 좋아한다.
나라살림은 거덜나고 밭은 거칠고
곳간은 비었는데 빛나는 옷을 입고 칼을 차고
실컷 먹고 쓰는 돈이 남아 도는 것을
일컬어 도둑의 치레이니 도가 아니니라.

54. Cultivate Harmony

장 제54

Cultivate harmony within yourself, and harmony becomes real;
Cultivate harmony within your family, and harmony becomes fertile;
Cultivate harmony within your community, and harmony becomes abundant;
Cultivate harmony within your culture, and harmony becomes enduring;
Cultivate harmony within the world, and harmony becomes ubiquitous.
Live with a person to understand that person;
Live with a family to understand that family;
Live with a community to understand that community;
Live with a culture to understand that culture;
Live with the world to understand the world.
How can I live with the world?
By accepting.

잘 지어진 것은 뽑히지 않고,
잘 감싸진 것은 벗겨지지 않으니,
자손들이 모시기를 그치지 않는다.
스스로를 닦으면 그 덕이 참되지고,
집안을 닦으면 그 덕에 남음이 생기고,
동네를 닦으면 그 덕이 오래가고,
나라를 닦으면 그 덕이 넉넉해지며,
세상을 닦으면 그 덕이 넓어진다.
그리하여 나로 남을 보고,
내 집으로 남의 집을 보고,
우리 동네로 남의 동네를 보고,
우리 나라로 다른 나라를 보며,
나의 세상으로 다른 세상을 본다.
나는 어찌하여 세상이 그러하다는 것을 아는가? 이로써이다.

55. Soft Bones

장 제55

Who is filled with harmony is like a newborn.
Wasps and snakes will not bite him;
Hawks and tigers will not claw him.
His bones are soft yet his grasp is sure,
For his flesh is supple;
His mind is innocent yet his body is virile,
For his vigour is plentiful;
His song is long-lasting yet his voice is sweet,
For his grace is perfect.
But knowing harmony creates abstraction,
And following abstraction creates ritual.
Exceeding nature creates calamity,
And controlling nature creates violence.

덕을 두텁게 품은 자는, 비유하자면 어린아이같다.
독벌레가 쏘지 않고, 사나운 짐승이 덮치지 않고, 힘센 새도 채가지 않는다.
어린아이는 뼈도 약하고 근육도 부드럽지만 단단히 쥔다.
남녀간의 교합은 모르지만 고추가 단단해지는 것은 정기의 지극함이다.
종일 울어도 목이 쉬지 않는 것은 조화의 지극함이다.
조화를 아는 것은 오래간다 부르고,
오래감을 아는 것은 밝다 부르고,
생을 더하는 것은 상서롭다 부르나,
마음이 기를 부리는 것은 강하다 부른다.
모든 것은 강해지면 곧 늙으니 이를 도가 아니라고 한다.
도가 아닌 것은 일찍 그친다.

56. Impartiality

장 제56

Who understands does not preach;
Who preaches does not understand.
Reserve your judgments and words;
Smooth differences and forgive disagreements;
Dull your wit and simplify your purpose;
Accept the world.
Then,
Friendship and enmity,
Profit and loss,
Honour and disgrace,
Will not affect you;
The world will accept you.

아는 이는 말하지 않고, 말하는 이는 알지 못한다.
구멍을 막고, 문을 잠그고,
날카로움을 꺾고, 어지러움을 풀고,
빛남을 다스리고, 먼지와 함께하니,
이를 알수없게 같아진다고 한다.
그리하여 가까이하지도 멀리하지도 못하며,
이롭게도 해롭게도 못하고
귀하게도 천하게도 하지 못한다.
그래서 천하에 귀한것이 된다.

57. Conquer with Inaction

장 제57

Do not control the people with laws,
Nor violence nor espionage,
But conquer them with inaction.
For:
The more morals and taboos there are,
The more cruelty afflicts people;
The more guns and knives there are,
The more factions divide people;
The more arts and skills there are,
The more change obsoletes people;
The more laws and taxes there are,
The more theft corrupts people.
Yet take no action, and the people nurture eachother;
Make no laws, and the people deal fairly with eachother;
Own no interest, and the people cooperate with eachother;
Express no desire, and the people harmonize with eachother.

올바름으로 나라를 다스리고, 전략으로 군대를 이끌며,
아무것도 하지 않아 천하를 잡는다.
나는 어찌하여 그러함을 아는가? 이로써이다.
천하에 꺼리고 피하는 것이 많아지면 백성들은 두루 가난해지고,
백성들에게 물건이 많아지면 나라는 더욱 혼미해지고,
사람들이 재주가 늘고 교활해지면 기이한 물건은 더욱 생겨날 뿐이고,
법과 명령이 명백해지면 도적이 늘어날 뿐이다.
그리하여 성인이 말하길,
나는 아무것도 하지 않아 백성은 스스로 변하고,
내가 고요함을 좋아하니 백성은 올바르게 되며,
내가 아무것도 하지 않으니 백성은 스스로 풍족해지고,
내가 욕심을 내지 않으니 백성은 스스로 순박해지더라.

58. No End

장 제58

When government is lazy and informal
The people are kind and honest;
When government is efficient and severe
The people are discontented and deceitful.
Good fortune follows upon disaster;
Disaster lurks within good fortune;
Who can say how things will end?
Perhaps there is no end.
Honesty is ever deceived;
Kindness is ever seduced;
Men have been like this for a long time.
So the sage is firm but not cutting,
Pointed but not piercing,
Straight but not rigid,
Bright but not blinding.

다스림이 어둡고 답답한데도, 백성은 순박, 질박하고,
다스림이 꼼꼼하고 자상한데도, 백성은 모자란다 아우성이다.
화는 복이 의지하는 바이고, 복은 그 안에 화가 숨는게로구나!
누가 그 끝을 알겠는가. 정해진 것은 없다.
올바름이 기이한 것이 되고, 착한것이 다시 요망해지니,
백성들이 미혹된지 이미 오래이다.
그리하여 성인은
방정하지만 해를 끼치지 않고, 청렴하지만 상처입히지 않고,
강직하지만 방자하지 않고, 빛나지만 눈부시지 않다.

59. Restraint

장 제59

Manage a great nation as you would cook a delicate fish.
To govern men in accord with nature
It is best to be restrained;
Restraint makes agreement easy to attain,
And easy agreement builds harmonious relationships;
With sufficient harmony no resistance will arise;
When no resistance arises, then you possess the heart of the nation,
And when you possess the nation’s heart, your influence will long endure:
Deeply rooted and firmly established.
This is the method of far sight and long life.

사람을 다스리고 하늘을 섬기는 일에는, 검소함만한 것이 없다.
그저 검소해야 하는 것이니, 이를 '먼저 한다'고 부른다.
'먼저 한다'는 것은 덕을 거듭 쌓는 것이다.
덕을 거듭 쌓다보면 이겨내지 못할 것이 없다.
이겨내지 못할 것이 없다는 것은 그 끝을 모른다는 것이다.
끝을 모를 정도라면, 한 나라를 얻을만 하다.
나라를 얻어 그 어미가 되면, 오래갈만 하다.
이를 '뿌리가 깊고 단단히 뻗어, 오래 살고 길게 볼 수 있는' 도라 부른다.

60. Demons

장 제60

When you use the Way to conquer the world,
Your demons will lose their power to harm.
It is not that they lose their power as such,
But that they will not harm others;
Because they will not harm others,
You will not harm others:
When neither you nor your demons can do harm,
You will be at peace with them.

큰 나라를 다스리는 것은 마치 작은 생선을 삶듯 한다.
도로서 천하에 임하면 귀신도 힘을 못쓴다.
귀신도 힘을 못쓰니, 그 힘은 사람을 상하게 할 수가 없다.
그 힘도 사람을 상하게 못하니, 성인 역시 사람을 상하게 못한다.
귀신도 성인도 사람을 상하게 못하므로, 덕이 사람에게 돌아간다.

61. Submission

장 제61

A nation is like a hierarchy, a marketplace, and a maiden.
A maiden wins her husband by submitting to his advances;
Submission is a means of union.
So when a large country submits to a small country
It will adopt the small country;
When a small country submits to a large country
It will be adopted by the large country;
The one submits and adopts;
The other submits and is adopted.
It is in the interest of a large country to unite and gain service,
And in the interest of a small country to unite and gain patronage;
If both would serve their interests,
Both must submit.

큰 나라는 아래로 흘러간다.
천하가 만나는 것이니 천하의 암컷이다.
암컷은 언제나 고요함으로 수컷을 이기니, 고요함으로 아래가 된다.
그러므로 큰 나라가 작은 나라의 아래가 되면, 작은 나라를 얻을 수 있고,
작은 나라가 큰 나라의 아래가 되면, 큰 나라를 얻을 수 있다.
그것은 얻어서 낮아지는 것이기도 하고, 낮기때문에 얻어지는 것이기도 하다.
큰 나라는 작은 나라 사람들을 아울러 기르는 것 뿐이고,
작은 나라는 큰 나라 사람들에게 들어가 섬기려는 것 뿐이니,
무릇 두 나라가 각자 이루고자하는 것을 얻으려면,
마땅히 큰 나라가 낮추어야 한다.

62. Sin

장 제62

The Way is the fate of men,
The treasure of the saint,
And the refuge of the sinner.
Fine words are often borrowed,
And great deeds are often appropriated;
Therefore, when a man falls, do not abandon him,
And when a man gains power, do not honour him;
Only remain impartial and show him the Way.
Why should someone appreciate the Way?
The ancients said, “By it, those who seek may easily find,
And those who regret may easily absolve”
So it is the most precious gift.

도는 모든 것의 근원이라,
착한 이의 보배지만, 착하지 않은 이도 간직하고 있다.
아름다운 말은 천냥빚도 갚고, 존경스러운 행동은 사람들 마음에 남을 수 있다.
사람이 착하지 않다고 어찌 버릴 수 있겠는가.
그래서 천자를 세우고 삼공을 두었다.
비록 옥을 바친 뒤 마차를 바친다 하더라도, 꿇어앉아 이 도를 올림만 못하다.
옛날에 이 도를 귀하게 여긴 까닭은 무엇인가.
도를 얻으면 죄가 있어도 용서받기 때문이라 하지 않았던가.
그러므로 천하의 귀한 것이 된다.

63. Difficulty

장 제63

Practice no-action;
Attend to do-nothing;
Taste the flavorless,
Magnify the small,
Multiply the few,
Return love for hate.
Deal with the difficult while it is yet easy;
Deal with the great while it is yet small;
The difficult develops naturally from the easy,
And the great from the small;
So the sage, by dealing with the small,
Achieves the great.
Who finds it easy to promise finds it hard to be trusted;
Who takes things lightly finds things difficult;
The sage recognizes difficulty, and so has none.

'위하지 않음'을 하고,
'일없음'을 일삼고,
'맛이 없음'을 맛보라.
큰것을 작게, 많은 것을 적게, 원한은 덕으로 갚아라.
어려운 일은 쉬운 것부터 그리고,
큰 일은 세세한 것부터 한다.
천하의 어려운 일은 반드시 쉬운 것부터 생겨나고,
천하의 큰 일은 반드시 세세한 것부터 만들어지기 때문이다.
그리하여 성인은 결코 큰 일을 하지 않아, 능히 큰 일을 이룰 수 있다.
무릇 가벼운 승락은 믿음이 적기 마련이고
쉬운 일이 많으면 반드시 어려운 일도 많다.
그리하여 성인은 다만 모든 것을 어렵게 여겨, 끝내 어려운 일이 없다.

64

장 제64

64a. Care at the Beginning

What lies still is easy to grasp;
What lies far off is easy to anticipate;
What is brittle is easy to shatter;
What is small is easy to disperse.
Yet a tree broader than a man can embrace is born of a tiny shoot;
A dam greater than a river can overflow starts with a clod of earth;
A journey of a thousand miles begins at the spot under one’s feet.
Therefore deal with things before they happen;
Create order before there is confusion.

64b. Care at the End

He who acts, spoils;
He who grasps, loses.
People often fail on the verge of success;
Take care at the end as at the beginning,
So that you may avoid failure.
The sage desires no-desire,
Values no-value,
Learns no-learning,
And returns to the places that people have forgotten;
He would help all people to become natural,
But then he would not be natural.

안정된 것은 지니기 쉽고, 드러나지 않은 것은 꾀하기 쉽고,
연한 것은 녹기 쉽고, 작은 것은 흩어지기 쉽다.
드러나지 않았을때 해야하고, 어지럽지 않았을 때 다스려야 한다.
아름드리 나무도 털끝만한 것에서 생겨나고,
구층 누대도 바닥다지기로부터 일어나며,
천리길도 발밑에서 시작된다.
하려는 자는 실패하고, 잡으려는 자는 잃는다.
성인은 억지로 하지 않으니 실패하지않고,
잡으려하지 않으니 잃지않는다.
백성이 일을 할 때는 항상 거의 다 해놓고 실패한다.
처음처럼 끌까지 신중하면, 일에 실패가 없다.
그래서 성인은,
'원하지 않음'을 원하여 얻기 어려운 것을 귀히 여기지 않고,
'배우지 않음'을 배워 뭇 사람의 잘못을 바로잡아,
모든 것이 스스로 그러하게끔 도우나 감히 억지로 하지 않는다.

65. Subtlety

장 제65

The ancients did not seek to rule people with knowledge,
But to help them become natural.
It is difficult for knowledgeable people to become natural;
So to use law to control a nation weakens the nation,
But to use nature to control a nation strengthens the nation.
Understanding these two paths is understanding subtlety;
Subtlety runs deep, ranges wide,
Resolves confusion and preserves peace.

옛날에 도를 잘 행한 자는,
백성을 밝게하지 않고 어리석게 만들었다.
백성을 다스리는 것이 어려운 것은 꾀를 많이 내기 때문이다.
그러므로 꾀로서 나라를 다스리면 나라의 적이 되고,
꾀를 내지 않고 다스리면 나라의 복이 된다.
나라의 적과 복을 알아야 본보기가 되고,
그 본보기를 언제나 마음에 두고있는 것을 '그윽한 덕'이라 부른다.
'그윽한 덕'은 깊고도 멀어 사물과는 반대편에 있으니,
끝내 큰 순리에 이른다.

66. Lead by Following

장 제66

The river carves out the valley by flowing beneath it.
Thereby the river is the master of the valley.
In order to master people
One must speak as their servant;
In order to lead people
One must follow them.
So when the sage rises above the people,
They do not feel oppressed;
And when the sage stands before the people,
They do not feel hindered.
So the popularity of the sage does not fail,
He does not contend, and no one contends against him.

강과 바다가 모든 골짜기의 물을 받아낼 수 있는 것은 더 아래에 있기 때문이다.
그래서 모든 골짜기의 물이 흘러갈 수 있다.
그리하여 성인이 사람들 위에 오르려고 하면 반드시 그 말을 낮추고,
사람들보다 앞서려고 하면, 반드시 그 몸을 뒤로 뺀다.
그러면 사람들은 성인이 위에 있어도 무겁게 느끼지 않으며,
성인이 앞에 있어도 해롭다고 느끼지 않는다.
따라서 천하사람은 성인을 즐겁게 추대하지 싫어하지 않는다.
성인은 다투지 않으니 천하사람은 성인과 다툴 수 없다.

67. Unimportance

장 제67

All the world says,
“I am important;
I am separate from all the world.
I am important because I am separate,
Were I the same, I could never be important.”
Yet here are three treasures
That I cherish and commend to you:
The first is compassion,
By which one finds courage.
The second is restraint,
By which one finds strength.
And the third is unimportance,
By which one finds influence.
Those who are fearless, but without compassion,
Powerful, but without restraint,
Or influential, yet important,
Cannot endure.

천하는 나의 도가 커서 닮은 것이 없다고 한다.
크기 때문에 아마 닮은 것이 없는듯 싶다.
무언가와 닮았었다면 오래 지날수록 자잘해지는 것 아니겠는가.
나에겐 세 가지 보물이 있으니, 지녀서 소중히 여긴다.
첫 번째는 자애로움이고,
두 번째는 검소함이며,
세 번째는 감히 천하의 사람 앞에 먼저 나서지 않음이다.
자애롭기 때문에 용감할 수 있고,
검소하기 때문에 능히 널리 베풀 수 있으며, 천
하보다 먼저 나서려 하지 않아 큰 그릇을 이루고 우두머리가 될 수 있다.
지금 자애로움을 버린 채 용감해지려 하고,
검소함을 버린 채 널리 베푸려 하며,
다른 사람들 뒤에 서는 것을 버리고 먼저 나서려하면, 그저 죽을 수밖에 없다.
무릇 자애로 싸우면 이기고, 자애로 지키면 견고해진다.
하늘이 그를 지키고자 한다면, 자애로 지켜줄 것이다.

68. Compassion

장 제68

Compassion is the finest weapon and best defence.
If you would establish harmony,
Compassion must surround you like a fortress.
Therefore,
A good soldier does not inspire fear;
A good fighter does not display aggression;
A good conqueror does not engage in battle;
A good leader does not exercise authority.
This is the value of unimportance;
This is how to win the cooperation of others;
This to how to build the same harmony that is in nature.

훌륭한 용사는 무예가 세 보이지 않고,
잘 싸우는 사람은 성내지 않으며,
적을 잘 이기는 사람은 다투지 않고,
다른 이를 잘 부리는 사람은 자신을 낮춘다.
이를 다투지 않는 덕이라 하고,
사람 부리는 힘이라 하며,
하늘과 짝한다고 하는데
이는 옛날의 지극한 도이다.

69. Ambush

장 제69

There is a saying among soldiers:
It is easier to lose a yard than take an inch.
In this manner one may deploy troops without marshalling them,
Bring weapons to bear without exposing them,
Engage the foe without invading them,
And exhaust their strength without fighting them.
There is no worse disaster than misunderstanding your enemy;
To do so endangers all of my treasures;
So when two well matched forces oppose eachother,
The general who maintains compassion will win.

병법에 이런 말이 있다.
"나는 감히 선제공격은 하지 않으니 다만 끌려갈 뿐이다.
감히 한뼘도 진군하려하지 않고 오히려 한나절이나 물러선다."
이를 일러 진 없는 행군, 팔 없이 휘두르는 주먹,
없는 적을 무찌름, 없는 병사를 잡음이라고 한다.
적을 가볍게 보는 것처럼 큰 화가 없으니,
적을 가볍게 보면 내 보배를 거의 잃을것이다.
그러므로 병사를 서로 다툴 때, 슬퍼하는 자가 이기는 법인게다.

70. Individuality

장 제70

My words are easy to understand
And my actions are easy to perform
Yet no other can understand or perform them.
My words have meaning; my actions have reason;
Yet these cannot be known and I cannot be known.
We are each unique, and therefore valuable;
Though the sage wears coarse clothes, his heart is jade.

내 말은 참으로 알기도 쉽고, 실천하기도 쉬운데,
천하 사람들은 알지도 못하고, 실천도 못한다.
말에는 요지가 있고, 일에도 핵심이 있다.
무릇 요지도 핵심도 모르니까, 나를 모르는 것이다.
나를 아는 자가 드무니, 나라는 자가 귀해진다.
그래서 성인은 베옷을 입고도 옥을 품고 있는 것이다.

71. Limitation

장 제71

Who recognizes his limitations is healthy;
Who ignores his limitations is sick.
The sage recognizes this sickness as a limitation.
And so becomes immune.

알고도 알지못함은 좋지만 알지못하면서 안다고 여기는 것은 병이다.
무릇 병을 병이라 여기면 문제가 되지 않는것이다.
성인이 문제가 없는 것은 병을 병이라 여기기 때문이다.

72. Revolution

장 제72

When people have nothing more to lose,
Then revolution will result.
Do not take away their lands,
And do not destroy their livelihoods;
If your burden is not heavy then they will not shirk it.
The sage maintains himself but exacts no tribute,
Values himself but requires no honours;
He ignores abstraction and accepts substance.

백성이 위엄을 두려워하지 않으면 큰 억압에 이르게 된다.
그들의 집을 업신여기지 말고, 그들의 삶을 싫어하지 마라.
백성을 싫어하지 않을 때에야 백성도 싫어하지 않는다.
성인은 이미 잘 알기 때문에 자신을 드러내지 않으며,
스스로 사랑하기 때문에 자신을 귀히 여기지 않는다.
그래서 성인은 저것을 버리고 이것을 취한다.

73. Fate

장 제73

Who is brave and bold will perish;
Who is brave and subtle will benefit.
The subtle profit where the bold perish
For fate does not honour daring.
And even the sage dares not tempt fate.
Fate does not attack, yet all things are conquered by it;
It does not ask, yet all things answer to it;
It does not call, yet all things meet it;
It does not plan, yet all things are determined by it.
Fate’s net is vast and its mesh is coarse,
Yet none escape it.

과감함에 용감하면 죽고, 과감하지 않음에 용감하면 산다.
이 두가지의 어떤 것은 이롭고, 어떤 것은 해롭다.
하늘이 싫어하는 것을 그 누가 알겠는가.
그래서 성인도 과감함에 용감한 것을 꺼리는 것이다.
하늘의 도는,
싸우지 않고도 잘 이기고, 말하지 않고도 잘 알아들으며,
부르지 않아도 스스로 찾아오고, 느긋하면서도 잘 꾀한다.
하늘의 그물은 넓고 넓어, 성긴듯 하나 놓치는 것이 없다.

74. Execution

장 제74

If people were not afraid of death,
Then what would be the use of an executioner?
If people were only afraid of death,
And you executed everyone who did not obey,
No one would dare to disobey you.
Then what would be the use of an executioner?
People fear death because death is an instrument of fate.
When people are killed by execution rather than by fate,
This is like carving wood in the place of a carpenter.
Those who carve wood in place of a carpenter
Often injure their hands.

백성이 죽음을 겁내지 않는데 어찌 죽음으로 그들을 두렵게 만들겠는가.
만약 백성이 언제나 죽음을 겁내게 하여 나쁜 짓을 하려는 자가 있다면,
내가 붙잡아 죽이겠다, 누가 감히 그러한가.
죽임을 맡은 자는 언제나 따로 있어,
만약 죽임을 맡은 자를 대신하여 죽인다면,
이를 큰 목수를 대신해 나무를 깎는 것이라 한다.
큰 목수를 대신해 나무를 깎는 자 중에,
자기 손을 다치지 않는 자는 드물다.

75. Rebellion

장 제75

When rulers take grain so that they may feast,
Their people become hungry;
When rulers take action to serve their own interests,
Their people become rebellious;
When rulers take lives so that their own lives are maintained,
Their people no longer fear death.
When people act without regard for their own lives
They overcome those who value only their own lives.

백성이 굶주리는 것은 위에서 너무 많은 세금을 가로채기 때문이다.
백성을 다스리기 어려운 것은 위에서 억지로 뭔가 하려들기 때문이다.
백성이 죽음을 가벼이 여기는 것은 위에서 자신들의 삶만 두텁게 여기기 때문이다.
무릇 삶을 억지로 꾸려나가지 않으려는 자가 삶을 귀히 여기는 자보다 현명하다.

76. Flexibility

장 제76

A newborn is soft and tender,
A crone, hard and stiff.
Plants and animals, in life, are supple and succulent;
In death, withered and dry.
So softness and tenderness are attributes of life,
And hardness and stiffness, attributes of death.
Just as a sapless tree will split and decay
So an inflexible force will meet defeat;
The hard and mighty lie beneath the ground
While the tender and weak dance on the breeze above.

사람이 태어날 때는 부드럽고 약하지만, 죽을 때는 단단하고 억세다.
모든 풀과 나무가 날 때는 부드럽고 연하지만, 죽으면 마르고 딱딱하다.
그러므로 단단하고 억센것은 죽음의 무리이고, 부드럽고 약한 것은 삶의 무리이다.
그리하여 군대가 강하면 이기지 못하고, 나무가 강하면 부러진다.
강하고 큰 것은 아래에 처하고, 부드럽고 약한 것이 위에 자리잡는다.

77. Need

장 제77

Is the action of nature not unlike drawing a bow?
What is higher is pulled down, and what is lower is raised up;
What is taller is shortened, and what is thinner is broadened;
Nature’s motion decreases those who have more than they need
And increases those who need more than they have.
It is not so with Man.
Man decreases those who need more than they have
And increases those who have more than they need.
To give away what you do not need is to follow the Way.
So the sage gives without expectation,
Accomplishes without claiming credit,
And has no desire for ostentation.

하늘의 도는 마치 활을 당기는 것 같구나.
높은 것은 누르고, 낮은 것은 올리며,
넉넉한 것은 덜어내고, 부족한 것은 보탠다.
하늘의 도는 넉넉한 것을 덜어내어 부족한 것에 보태는 것이다.
사람의 도는 자연스럽지 않아, 부족한 것에서 덜어 넉넉한 쪽에 보탠다.
누가 넉넉한 곳의 것들로 천하를 받들 수 있는가.
오직 도를 가진 이 뿐이다.
그래서 성인은 실천하지만 자랑하지 않고,
이루되 그 안에서 안주하거나,
자신의 현명함을 드러내려 하지 않는다.

78. Yielding

장 제78

Nothing in the world is as soft and yielding as water,
Yet nothing can better overcome the hard and strong,
For they can neither control nor do away with it.
The soft overcomes the hard,
The yielding overcomes the strong;
Every person knows this,
But no one can practice it.
Who attends to the people would control the land and grain;
Who attends to the state would control the whole world;
Truth is easily hidden by rhetoric.

천하의 부드럽고 약한 것으로 물만한 것이 없지만,
단단하고 강한 것을 공격하는 것으로도 물 이상이 없으니,
이를 바꿀 수 있는 것이 없다.
약함이 강함을 이기고, 부드러움이 굳셈을 이긴다.
천하 사람들 중에 이를 모르는 자가 없으나, 실천하는 자가 없다.
그래서 성인은 말하길,
나라의 더러운 것을 받아내는 자를 일러 사직의 주인이라 부르고,
나라의 상서롭지 못한 일을 해내는 자를 천하의 왕이라 부른다.
바른 말은 마치 반대되는 듯 하다.

79. Reconciliation

장 제79

When conflict is reconciled, some hard feelings remain;
This is dangerous.
The sage accepts less than is due
And does not blame or punish;
For harmony seeks agreement
Where justice seeks payment.
The ancients said: “nature is impartial;
Therefore it serves those who serve all.”

큰 원망은 화해시켜도
꼭 남은 미움이 있다.
이것을 어떻게 참하다 할 수 있는가?
그렇게 때문에 성인은 약속의 증거를 붙들고도,
다른 사람에게 (약속의 실행을) 요구하지 않는다.
쌓은 것이 있으면 약속을 지키고,
쌓은 것이 없으면 세금을 맡는다.
하늘의 도는 (따로) 친함이 없지만,
언제나 선인과 함께 한다.

80. Utopia

장 제80

Let your community be small, with only a few people;
Keep tools in abundance, but do not depend upon them;Appreciate your life and be content with your home;
Sail boats and ride horses, but don’t go too far;
Keep weapons and armour, but do not employ them;
Let everyone read and write,
Eat well and make beautiful things.
Live peacefully and delight in your own society;
Dwell within cock-crow of your neighbours,
But maintain your independence from them.

나라를 작게 하고, 백성을 적게 하라.
수십 수백 사람이 사용하는 도구가 있어도 쓰지 않게 하고,
백성이 죽음을 무겁게 여기고 멀리 이사하지 않게 하면,
배와 수레가 있어도 탈 곳이 없고,
갑옷과 병기가 있어도 쓸 일이 없다.
백성이 다시 끈을 묶어 쓰게 하면,
달게 먹고,
아름답게 입고,
편히 머물고,
즐겁게 산다.
이웃 나라가 서로 보이고,
닭 울고 개 짖는 소리가 서로 들려도,
백성은 늙어 죽도록
서로 왔다 갔다 하지 않는다.

81. The Sage

장 제81

Honest people use no rhetoric;
Rhetoric is not honesty.
Enlightened people are not cultured;
Culture is not enlightenment.
Content people are not rich;
Riches are not contentment.
So the sage does not serve himself;
The more he does for others, the more he is satisfied;
The more he gives, the more he receives.
Nature flourishes at the expense of no one;
So the sage benefits all men and contends with none.

믿음직한 말은 아름답지 못하고,
아름다운 말은 믿음직하지 않다.
참한 이는 말을 잘하지 못하고,
말 잘하는 이는 참하지 않다.
아는 이는 넓지 않고,
넓은 이는 알지 못한다.
성인은 쌓지 않으니,
이미 다른 이를 위하기 때문에 자기는 더 가지며,
이미 다른 이에게 주기 때문에 자기는 더 많다.
하늘의 도는 해롭지 않고 이로우며,
성인의 도는 싸우지 않고 이룬다.
