51. Nurture

51

The Way bears all things;
Harmony nurtures them;
Nature shapes them;
Use completes them.
Each follows the Way and honours harmony,
Not by law,
But by being.
The Way bears, nurtures, shapes, completes,
Shelters, comforts, and makes a home for them.
Bearing without possessing,
Nurturing without taming,
Shaping without forcing,
This is harmony.

هر موجودي در هستي
جلوه اي از تائو است.
موجودات در ناآگاهي ولي آزاد و كامل
كالبدي مادي مي گيرند و به وجود مي آيند.
به همين دليل هر موجودي
ناخودآگاه تائو را بزرگ مي شمارد.
موجودات از تائو تولد مي يابند.
تائو آن ها را تغذيه و نگهداري مي كند،
مراقب آن هاست و از آن ها حمايت مي كند
و دوباره آن ها را به خود باز مي گرداند.
آفريدن بدون احساس مالكيت،
عمل كردن بدون انتظار
و راهنمايي بدون دخالت
از خصوصيات تائوست.
به عمين دليل عشقِ تائو
در طبيعتِ همه چيز است.

52. Clarity

52

The origin of the world is its mother;
Understand the mother, and you understand the child;
Embrace the child, and you embrace the mother,
Who will not perish when you die.
Reserve your judgments and words
And you maintain your influence;
Speak your mind and take positions
And nothing can save you.
As observing detail is clarity,
So maintaining flexibility is strength;
Use the light but shed no light,
So that you do yourself no harm,
But embrace clarity.

در ابتدا فقط تائو بود.
تمام چيزهاي ديگر از آن به وجود آمدند
و دوباره به آن باز مي گردند.
براي يافتن ريشه ها
در جلوه ها جستجو كنيد.
وقتي كودك را بشناسيد
و مادرش را بيابيد
از غم و اندوه رها مي شويد.
اگر ذهن خود را با قضاوت هاي مختلف بسته نگاه داريد
و آن را از آرزوها پر كنيد
دلي نا آرام خواهيد داشت.
اگر ذهن خود را از قضاوت هاي مختلف آزاد نگاه داريد
و از حواس خود پيروي نكنيد
دلتان آرامش خواهد يافت.
ديدن در تاريكي بصيرت است.
دانستن اين كه چگونه تسليم باشيد، قدرت است.
نور وجود خود را به كار گيريد
و به منبع نور باز گرديد؛
اين تجربه ي جاودانگي است.

53. Difficult Paths

53

With but a small understanding
One may follow the Way like a main road,
Fearing only to leave it;
Following a main road is easy,
Yet people delight in difficult paths.
When palaces are kept up
Fields are left to weeds
And granaries empty;
Wearing fine clothes,
Bearing sharp swords,
Glutting with food and drink,
Hoarding wealth and possessions —
These are the ways of theft,
And far from the Way.

راهِ بزرگ ساده و گسترده است،
با اين وجود مردم راه هاي باريك را ترجيح مي دهند.
آگاه باشيد چه زماني تعادلتان بر هم مي خورد.
در تائو متمركز باقي بمانيد.
وقتي ثروتمندان در رفاه اند،
در حالي كه كشاورزان زمين هاي خود را از دست مي دهند؛
وقتي دولتمردان بودجه هاي گزاف
صرف ساز و كارهاي نظامي مي كنند؛
وقتي طبقه ي بالا مصرف گرا و بي مسئوليت است
و وقتي فقرا جايي براي تنظم خواهي از اين نابساماني ندارند؛
اوضاع از هماهنگي با تائو به در آمده است.

54. Cultivate Harmony

54

Cultivate harmony within yourself, and harmony becomes real;
Cultivate harmony within your family, and harmony becomes fertile;
Cultivate harmony within your community, and harmony becomes abundant;
Cultivate harmony within your culture, and harmony becomes enduring;
Cultivate harmony within the world, and harmony becomes ubiquitous.
Live with a person to understand that person;
Live with a family to understand that family;
Live with a community to understand that community;
Live with a culture to understand that culture;
Live with the world to understand the world.
How can I live with the world?
By accepting.

هركه در تائو ريشه دارد،
هرگز ريشه كن نمي شود.
هركه تائو را در بر كشيده است،
هرگز رها نخواهد شد.
نام چنين كسي نسل پس از نسل با احترام برده مي شود.
اجازه دهيد تائو در زندگي تان حضور يابد
و به اين ترتيب اصالت يابيد.
اجازه دهيد تائو در خانواده تان حضور يابد
و خانواده تان شكوفا گردد.
اجازه دهيد تائو در كشورتان رخ بنمايد
و كشورتان نمونه اي خواهد بود براي كشور هاي ديگر جهان.
اجازه دهيد تائو در جهان حاضر باشد
و جهانيان در شادي و شور به پايكوبي مي پردازند.
چگونه مي دانم اين حقيقت دارد؟
با نگريستن به درون خويش.

55. Soft Bones

55

Who is filled with harmony is like a newborn.
Wasps and snakes will not bite him;
Hawks and tigers will not claw him.
His bones are soft yet his grasp is sure,
For his flesh is supple;
His mind is innocent yet his body is virile,
For his vigour is plentiful;
His song is long-lasting yet his voice is sweet,
For his grace is perfect.
But knowing harmony creates abstraction,
And following abstraction creates ritual.
Exceeding nature creates calamity,
And controlling nature creates violence.

او كه در هماهنگي با تائو است
همچون كودكي نوزاده است؛
استخوان هايش نرم و ماهيچه هايش ضعيف اند
ولي نيروهاي حيات در او شديد و قدرتمند اند؛
مي تواند تمام طول روز فرياد بكشد و گريه كند
بدون اينكه صدايش خش دار و دورگه شود؛
هماهنگي و يكپارچگي كامل در او كامل است.
قدرت فرزانه چنين است.
او اجازه مي دهد همه چيز بيايند و بروند؛
بدون هرگونه تلاش و آرزويي.
او هرگز در انتظار نتيجه نيست
پس هرگز نااميد نمي شود.
او هرگز نااميد نمي شود
پس روحش هميشه جوان است.

56. Impartiality

56

Who understands does not preach;
Who preaches does not understand.
Reserve your judgments and words;
Smooth differences and forgive disagreements;
Dull your wit and simplify your purpose;
Accept the world.
Then,
Friendship and enmity,
Profit and loss,
Honour and disgrace,
Will not affect you;
The world will accept you.

آنان كه مي دانند، خاموش باقي مي مانند.
آنان كه نمي دانند، سخن مي گويند.
دهانت را ببند،
حواست را ناديده بگير،
زندگي ات را فراموش كن،
گره هايت را باز كن،
نگاهت را نرم و لطيف كن،
و گرد و خاكت را بتكان؛
اين هويت اصلي توست.
چون تائو باش.
نمي توان به تائو نزديك شد يا از آن دوري كرد،
از آن سود برد يا به آن آسيبي وارد كرد،
آن را گرامي داشت يا آبرويش را برد.
تائو تسليم كامل است
و به همين دليل ابدي است.

57. Conquer with Inaction

57

Do not control the people with laws,
Nor violence nor espionage,
But conquer them with inaction.
For:
The more morals and taboos there are,
The more cruelty afflicts people;
The more guns and knives there are,
The more factions divide people;
The more arts and skills there are,
The more change obsoletes people;
The more laws and taxes there are,
The more theft corrupts people.
Yet take no action, and the people nurture eachother;
Make no laws, and the people deal fairly with eachother;
Own no interest, and the people cooperate with eachother;
Express no desire, and the people harmonize with eachother.

اگر مي خواهي رهبر بزرگي باشي،
بايد ياد بگيري چگونه از تائو پيروي كني.
تلاش براي تسلط را متوقف كن.
نقشه هاي از قبل طراحي شده را به دور بريز.
جهان، خود خويش را اداره مي كند.
هرچه ممنوعيت ها بيشتر باشند
پاكدامني و تقوا در جامعه كمتر خواهد بود.
هرچه ابزار نظامي بيشتري انبار كنيد،
كمتر در امنيت خواهيد بود.
فرزانه مي گويد:
" قانون را رها مي كنم
و مردم با صداقت مي شوند.
اقتصاد را رها مي كنم
و مردم ثروتمند مي شوند.
تمامي نقشه ها براي رفاه مردم را رها مي كنم
و رفاه عمومي فراگير مي شود. "

58. No End

58

When government is lazy and informal
The people are kind and honest;
When government is efficient and severe
The people are discontented and deceitful.
Good fortune follows upon disaster;
Disaster lurks within good fortune;
Who can say how things will end?
Perhaps there is no end.
Honesty is ever deceived;
Kindness is ever seduced;
Men have been like this for a long time.
So the sage is firm but not cutting,
Pointed but not piercing,
Straight but not rigid,
Bright but not blinding.

اگر كشوري با شكيبايي اداره شود،
آرامش و شرافت بر آن حكم فرما مي شود.
اگر كشوري با سركوب اداره شود،
اندوه و نيرنگ بر آن حكم فرما مي شوند.
وقتي ميل به قدرت بر رأس امور است،
هرچه ايده آل ها والاتر باشند، نتيجه اندك تر است.
سعي كن مردم را خوشحال كني
و به اين ترتيب اساس غم و اندوه ناپديد مي شود.
فرزانه از اين كه الگوي خدمت است
راضي و خوشنود است.
در تحميل خواسته هاي خود تلاش نمي كند؛
صريح و واضح است ولي نمي رنجاند؛
رك و روراست و در عين حال انعطاف پذير؛
فروزان و تابناك است ولي نورش چشم را نمي زند.

59. Restraint

59

Manage a great nation as you would cook a delicate fish.
To govern men in accord with nature
It is best to be restrained;
Restraint makes agreement easy to attain,
And easy agreement builds harmonious relationships;
With sufficient harmony no resistance will arise;
When no resistance arises, then you possess the heart of the nation,
And when you possess the nation’s heart, your influence will long endure:
Deeply rooted and firmly established.
This is the method of far sight and long life.

براي خوب اداره كردن يك كشور
چيزي سودمند تر از ميانه روي نيست.
نشانه انسان ميانه رو
رهايي از ايده هاي شخصي است؛
شكيبا چون آسمان،
همه گير چون تابش خورشيد،
استوار چون كوه،
انعطاف پذير چون درختي در باد،
هدفي در نظر ندارد
و همه چيز را به كار مي گيرد.
زندگي، خود راهش را مي يابد.
براي فرزانه ناممكن وجود ندارد
چون رها و آزاد است
و به فكر رفاه ديگران؛
همچون مادري كه از فرزندش مراقبت مي كند.

60. Demons

60

When you use the Way to conquer the world,
Your demons will lose their power to harm.
It is not that they lose their power as such,
But that they will not harm others;
Because they will not harm others,
You will not harm others:
When neither you nor your demons can do harm,
You will be at peace with them.

اداره ي كشوري بزرگ
چون سرخ كردن ماهي اي كوچك است؛
با دستكاري بيش از حد، به حتم كار را خراب مي كني،
كشورت را در تائو متمركز كن
و بدي ديگر قدرتي نخواهد داشت؛
نه اين كه از ميان برود
ولي به سادگي مي تواني از راهش به در آيي.
بهانه اي به بدي براي مخالفت مده
و بدي خود به خود از ميان مي رود.

61. Submission

61

A nation is like a hierarchy, a marketplace, and a maiden.
A maiden wins her husband by submitting to his advances;
Submission is a means of union.
So when a large country submits to a small country
It will adopt the small country;
When a small country submits to a large country
It will be adopted by the large country;
The one submits and adopts;
The other submits and is adopted.
It is in the interest of a large country to unite and gain service,
And in the interest of a small country to unite and gain patronage;
If both would serve their interests,
Both must submit.

وقتي كشوري قدرت به دست مي آورد
همانند دريا مي شود؛
همه ي جريان ها به سوي او سرازير مي شود.
هر چه قدرت اين كشور بيشتر شود،
بيشتر نيازمند تواضع و فروتني است
فروتني يعني اعتماد به تائو
و از ميان رفتن نياز به دفاع از خود.
ملت بزرگ مانند مردي بزرگ است؛
وقتي اشتباهي مرتكب مي شود، متوجه آن مي شود
و آن را مي پذيرد.
با پذيرش اشتباه، آن را اصلاح مي كند.
كساني كه نقص هايشان را به او گوشزد مي كنند،
آموزگاران مشفق خويش مي داند
و دشمنانش را سايه ي خويش.
اگر حكومتي در تائو متمركز شود،
ملت خود را تغذيه كند
و در امور ديگران دخالت نكند؛
الگويي براي ديگر كشورها در سرتاسر دنيا خواهد بود.

62. Sin

62

The Way is the fate of men,
The treasure of the saint,
And the refuge of the sinner.
Fine words are often borrowed,
And great deeds are often appropriated;
Therefore, when a man falls, do not abandon him,
And when a man gains power, do not honour him;
Only remain impartial and show him the Way.
Why should someone appreciate the Way?
The ancients said, “By it, those who seek may easily find,
And those who regret may easily absolve”
So it is the most precious gift.

تائو مركز هستي است.
تائو گنجِ انسان نيك است
و پناه انسان بد.
افتخار با سخنان نيكو خريدني است،
احترام با اعمال نيكو
ولي تائو وراي هر ارزشي است
كه هيچ كس نمي تواند آن را تصاحب كند.
هنگامي كه رهبري جديد انتخاب مي شود،
با ثروت و مهارت خود به او كمك نكنيد
بلكه به او تائو را آموزش دهيد.
چرا فرزانگان كهن تائو را گرامي مي داشتند؟
زيرا در يگانگي با تائو
با جستجو كردن، مي يابيد
و هنگامي كه اشتباهي مرتكب مي شويد، بخشوده مي شويد؛
به همين دليل همه تائو را دوست دارند.

63. Difficulty

63

Practice no-action;
Attend to do-nothing;
Taste the flavorless,
Magnify the small,
Multiply the few,
Return love for hate.
Deal with the difficult while it is yet easy;
Deal with the great while it is yet small;
The difficult develops naturally from the easy,
And the great from the small;
So the sage, by dealing with the small,
Achieves the great.
Who finds it easy to promise finds it hard to be trusted;
Who takes things lightly finds things difficult;
The sage recognizes difficulty, and so has none.

در بي عملي عمل كنيد.
بدون تلاش كار كنيد.
كوچك را بزرگ شماريد
و كم را زياد.
با سخت هنگامي كه ساده است، رودررو شويد.
كارهاي بزرگ را به قطعات كوچك تقسيم كنيد و سپس آن را به انجام برسانيد.
وقتي فرزانه به مشكلي بر مي خورد،
متوقف مي شود و خود را وقف مشكل مي كند.
او به رفاه خود دلبسته نيست
پس مشكلات براي او مشكل نيستند.

64a. Care at the Beginning

What lies still is easy to grasp;
What lies far off is easy to anticipate;
What is brittle is easy to shatter;
What is small is easy to disperse.
Yet a tree broader than a man can embrace is born of a tiny shoot;
A dam greater than a river can overflow starts with a clod of earth;
A journey of a thousand miles begins at the spot under one’s feet.
Therefore deal with things before they happen;
Create order before there is confusion.

64b. Care at the End

He who acts, spoils;
He who grasps, loses.
People often fail on the verge of success;
Take care at the end as at the beginning,
So that you may avoid failure.
The sage desires no-desire,
Values no-value,
Learns no-learning,
And returns to the places that people have forgotten;
He would help all people to become natural,
But then he would not be natural.

آن چه ريشه دارد آسان تغذيه مي شود،
آن چه به تازگي رخ داده آسان اصلاح مي شود.
آن چه خشك و سخت است آسان مي شكند.
آن چه كوچك است آسان گسترده مي شود.
از مشكلات قبل از روي دادنشان جلوگيري كنيد.
به هر چيز قبل از به وجود آمدن نظم بدهيد.
درخت كاج عظيم
از بذري كوچك مي رويد
و سفرِ هزار فرسنگي
با يك گام آغاز مي شود.
با عجله در عمل شكست مي خوريد.
با سعي در فهميدن مسائل را از دست مي دهيد.
با زور زدن براي تكميل كاري،
آن چه به تقريب كامل بود را خراب مي كنيد.
فرزانه با جازه دادن به روند طبيعي رخدادها
اقدام مي كند.
او در پايان به همان آرامي است كه در ابتداي كار.
او هيچ ندارد
پس چيزي را براي از دست دادن برايش وجود ندارد.
آرزوي او رهايي از آرزوهاست.
آن چه فرا مي گيرد رهايي از آرزوهاست.
او به مردم يادآوري مي كند
كه چه كسي بوده اند.
براي او هيچ چيز به جز تائو اهميت ندارد
پس مي تواند مراقب همه چيز باشد.

65. Subtlety

65

The ancients did not seek to rule people with knowledge,
But to help them become natural.
It is difficult for knowledgeable people to become natural;
So to use law to control a nation weakens the nation,
But to use nature to control a nation strengthens the nation.
Understanding these two paths is understanding subtlety;
Subtlety runs deep, ranges wide,
Resolves confusion and preserves peace.

فرزانگان كهن
سعي در آموزش مردم نداشتند
كه با مهرباني به آن ها ندانستن را درس مي دادند.
وقتي مردم فكر مي كنند كه جواب ها را مي دانند،
راهنمايي كردنشان سخت است.
وقتي مي دانند كه نمي دانند،
مي توانند راهشان را بيابند.
اگر مي خواهيد ياد بگيريد چگونه امور مختلف را اداره كنيد،
از ثروتمند شدن يا زرنگ بودن پرهيز كنيد.
ساده ترين الگو واضح ترين است.
اگر به زندگي ساده و عادي راضي باشيد،
مي توانيد راه را به ديگران نشان دهيد
تا به طبيعت حقيقي خود باز گردند.

66. Lead by Following

66

The river carves out the valley by flowing beneath it.
Thereby the river is the master of the valley.
In order to master people
One must speak as their servant;
In order to lead people
One must follow them.
So when the sage rises above the people,
They do not feel oppressed;
And when the sage stands before the people,
They do not feel hindered.
So the popularity of the sage does not fail,
He does not contend, and no one contends against him.

همه ي رودها به دريا مي ريزند
زيرا دريا از آن ها فروتر است.
فروتني به دريا قدرت مي بخشد.
اگر مي خواهيد زندگي مردم را سامان ببخشيد،
فروتر از آن ها قرار بگيريد.
اگر مي خواهيد مردم را رهبري كنيد،
ياد بگيريد چگونه از آن ها پيروي كنيد.
فرزانه بالاتر از ديگران است
در حالي كه كسي احساس كوچكي نمي كند.
او جلوتر از ديگران است
در حالي كه كسي احساس زير دست بودن نمي كند.
دنيا از او سپاسگذار است.
با كسي رقابت نمي كند
و كسي نيز با او به رقابت نمي پردازد.

67. Unimportance

67

All the world says,
“I am important;
I am separate from all the world.
I am important because I am separate,
Were I the same, I could never be important.”
Yet here are three treasures
That I cherish and commend to you:
The first is compassion,
By which one finds courage.
The second is restraint,
By which one finds strength.
And the third is unimportance,
By which one finds influence.
Those who are fearless, but without compassion,
Powerful, but without restraint,
Or influential, yet important,
Cannot endure.

برخي مي گويند آموزش هاي من بي معني است.
برخي ديگر آن را رفيع ولي غير عملي مي دانند
ولي براي كساني كه به درون نگريسته اند،
همين آموزش هاي بي معني، پر معني است
و براي كساني كه به آن عمل مي كنند همين بلندي در عمق جانشان ريشه مي گيرد.
من تنها سه چيز را آموزش مي دهم؛
سادگي، شكيبايي و شفقت.
اين سه گرانبهاترين گنج ها هستند.
ساده در اعمال و افكار،
به منبع وجود باز مي گرديد.
شكيبا با دوستان و دشمنان هردو،
با همه چيز هماهنگي مي يابيد.
مهربان با خود
به همه ي موجوداتِ جهان در صلح و آشتي خواهيد بود.

68. Compassion

68

Compassion is the finest weapon and best defence.
If you would establish harmony,
Compassion must surround you like a fortress.
Therefore,
A good soldier does not inspire fear;
A good fighter does not display aggression;
A good conqueror does not engage in battle;
A good leader does not exercise authority.
This is the value of unimportance;
This is how to win the cooperation of others;
This to how to build the same harmony that is in nature.

بهترين ورزشكار
دوست دارد حريف مقابلش در بهترين وضعيت باشد.
بهترين سردار
به ذهن دشمنش رخنه مي كند.
بهترين تاجر
در خدمت همه ي اجتماع است.
بهترين رهبر
پيرو خواست مردم است.
همه اين ها نشان از برتريِ رقابت نكردن دارد.
نه اين كه دوست ندارند رقابت كنند
كه با روحيه بازيگوشي رقابت مي كنند.
درست همانند كودكان؛
در هماهنگي با تائو

69. Ambush

69

There is a saying among soldiers:
It is easier to lose a yard than take an inch.
In this manner one may deploy troops without marshalling them,
Bring weapons to bear without exposing them,
Engage the foe without invading them,
And exhaust their strength without fighting them.
There is no worse disaster than misunderstanding your enemy;
To do so endangers all of my treasures;
So when two well matched forces oppose eachother,
The general who maintains compassion will win.

در ميان سرداران مثلثي هست مي گويد:
" قبل از اولين حركت، بهتر است صبر كنيد و خوب اوضاع را برسي كنيد.
قبل از يك متر پيشروي بهتر است هزار متر عقب نشيني كنيد. "
اين يعني پيشروي بدون جلو رفتن
و عقب راندن بدون استفاده از ابزار جنگي.
هيچ شكستي بدتر از دست كم گرفتن دشمنان نيست.
دست كم گرفتن دشمن يعني اين كه تصور كنيم او بد است؛
به اين ترتيب سه گنج خود را ناديده مي گيريد
و به دشمن خويش تبديل مي شويد.
وقتي دو نيروي قوي رودروري هم قرار مي گيرند،
پيروزي از آن كسي است كه مي داند چگونه تسليم شود.

70. Individuality

70

My words are easy to understand
And my actions are easy to perform
Yet no other can understand or perform them.
My words have meaning; my actions have reason;
Yet these cannot be known and I cannot be known.
We are each unique, and therefore valuable;
Though the sage wears coarse clothes, his heart is jade.

آموزش هاي من ساده اند.
عمل كردن به آن ها راحت است؛
با وجود زيركي تان از آن ها سر در نمي آورد
و اگر سعي در عمل كردن به آن ها كنيد، شكست مي خوريد.
آموزش هاي من از جهان هم قديمي تر است.
چگونه مي توانيد معاني آن ها را در يابيد؟
اگر مي خواهيد مرا بشناسيد،
به عمق دل خود بنگريد.

71. Limitation

71

Who recognizes his limitations is healthy;
Who ignores his limitations is sick.
The sage recognizes this sickness as a limitation.
And so becomes immune.

ندانستن، دانش راستين است.
تلاش براي انباشتنِ دانش، بيماري است.
ابتدا بدانيد كه بيماريد،
سپس براي سلامتي كوشش كنيد.
فرزانه طبيب خود است.
او خود را از تمام دانسته هايش رها نموده
پس در حقيقت يكپارچه و كامل است.

72. Revolution

72

When people have nothing more to lose,
Then revolution will result.
Do not take away their lands,
And do not destroy their livelihoods;
If your burden is not heavy then they will not shirk it.
The sage maintains himself but exacts no tribute,
Values himself but requires no honours;
He ignores abstraction and accepts substance.

وقتي ديگر به خود اعتماد نداري
به قدرت دل مي بندي.
فرزانه به عقب گام مي نهد
تا مردم دچار سردرگمي نشوند.
او بدون آموزش دادن، آموزش مي دهد
تا براي مردم چيزي براي يادگرفتن وجود نداشته باشد.

73. Fate

73

Who is brave and bold will perish;
Who is brave and subtle will benefit.
The subtle profit where the bold perish
For fate does not honour daring.
And even the sage dares not tempt fate.
Fate does not attack, yet all things are conquered by it;
It does not ask, yet all things answer to it;
It does not call, yet all things meet it;
It does not plan, yet all things are determined by it.
Fate’s net is vast and its mesh is coarse,
Yet none escape it.

تائو هميشه در آرامش است.
بدون رقابت غلبه مي كند،
بدون سخن گفتن پاسخ مي دهد،
بدون فراخوانده شدن حضور مي يابد
و بي نقشه، تكميل مي كند.
توري كه گسترده جهان را در بر دارد.
با وجود شكاف هاي بزرگ اين تور
چيزي نمي تواند از آن فرار كند.

74. Execution

74

If people were not afraid of death,
Then what would be the use of an executioner?
If people were only afraid of death,
And you executed everyone who did not obey,
No one would dare to disobey you.
Then what would be the use of an executioner?
People fear death because death is an instrument of fate.
When people are killed by execution rather than by fate,

اگر بدانيد همه چيز در تغيير است،
به هيچ چيز دل نمي بنديد.
اگر از مرگ نهراسيد،
چيزي نيست كه نتوانيد به دست آريدش.
سعي در تسلط بر آينده
مانند اين است كه بخواهيد يك شَبه، استاد نجاري شويد.
وقتي ابزار نجاري را در دست داريد،
ممكن است حتي دستتان را قطع كنيد.

75. Rebellion

When rulers take grain so that they may feast,
Their people become hungry;
When rulers take action to serve their own interests,
Their people become rebellious;
When rulers take lives so that their own lives are maintained,
Their people no longer fear death.
When people act without regard for their own lives
They overcome those who value only their own lives.

وقتي ماليات ها زيادند،
مردم گرسنه مي مانند.
وقتي حكومت مختلف است،
مردم روحيه خود را از دست مي دهند.
به سود مردم عمل كنيد.
به آن ها اعتماد كنيد و تنهايشان بگذاريد.

76. Flexibility

76

A newborn is soft and tender,
A crone, hard and stiff.
Plants and animals, in life, are supple and succulent;
In death, withered and dry.
So softness and tenderness are attributes of life,
And hardness and stiffness, attributes of death.
Just as a sapless tree will split and decay
So an inflexible force will meet defeat;
The hard and mighty lie beneath the ground
While the tender and weak dance on the breeze above.

انسان نرم و لطيف زاده مي شود
و به هنگام مرگ خشك و سخت مي شود.
گياهان هنگامي كه سر از خاك بيرون مي آورند نرم و انعطاف پذيرند
و به هنگام مرگ خشك و شكننده.
پس هركه سخت و خشك است
مرگش نزديك شده
و هركه نرم و انعطاف پذير
سرشار از زندگي است.
سخت و خشك مي شكند.
نرم و انعطاف پذير باقي مي ماند.

77. Need

77

Is the action of nature not unlike drawing a bow?
What is higher is pulled down, and what is lower is raised up;
What is taller is shortened, and what is thinner is broadened;
Nature’s motion decreases those who have more than they need
And increases those who need more than they have.
It is not so with Man.
Man decreases those who need more than they have
And increases those who have more than they need.
To give away what you do not need is to follow the Way.
So the sage gives without expectation,
Accomplishes without claiming credit,
And has no desire for ostentation.

عملكرد تائو در جهان همانند كشيدن كمان است؛
دو سر كمان به پايين كشيده مي شود و ميانش بالا مي آيد؛
از زياد كم مي كند و به كم مي بخشد.
آنان كه سعي در تسلط دارند
و براي حفظ قدرت از زور استفاده مي كنند
و خلاف جهت تائو حركت مي كنند،
از كساني كه چيزي ندارند مي گيرند
و به كساني كه بيش از اندازه دارند، مي دهند.
فرزانه بي وقفه مي بخشد
زيرا آن چه دارد بي پايان است.
او بدون انتظار عمل مي كند
و هرگز تصور نمي كند بهتر از كسي است.

78. Yielding

78

Nothing in the world is as soft and yielding as water,
Yet nothing can better overcome the hard and strong,
For they can neither control nor do away with it.
The soft overcomes the hard,
The yielding overcomes the strong;
Every person knows this,
But no one can practice it.
Who attends to the people would control the land and grain;
Who attends to the state would control the whole world;
Truth is easily hidden by rhetoric.

هيچ چيز در اين جهان
چون آب، نرم و انعطاف پذير نيست.
با اين حال براي حل كردن آن چه سخت است
چيز ديگري ياراي مقابله با آب را ندارد.
نرمي بر سختي غلبه مي كند
و لطافت بر خشونت.
همه اين را مي دانند
ولي كمتر كسي به آن عمل مي كند.
فرزانه هنگام غم، آرام باقي مي ماند.
بدي به دل او راهي ندارد.
چون كمك كردن را ترك كرده
بزرگترين كمك مردم است.
كلام حقيقت متناقض به نظر مي رسد.

79. Reconciliation

79

When conflict is reconciled, some hard feelings remain;
This is dangerous.
The sage accepts less than is due
And does not blame or punish;
For harmony seeks agreement
Where justice seeks payment.
The ancients said: “nature is impartial;
Therefore it serves those who serve all.”

شكست يك فرصت است.
اگر ديگري را مقصر بداني،
پاياني براي مقصر دانستن ديگران وجود نخواهد داشت.
فرزانه به وظايفش عمل مي كند
و اشتباهاتش را اصلاح مي نمايد.
او آن چه ضروري است را به انجام مي رساند
و از ديگران چيزي طلب نمي كند.

80. Utopia

80

Let your community be small, with only a few people;
Keep tools in abundance, but do not depend upon them;Appreciate your life and be content with your home;
Sail boats and ride horses, but don’t go too far;
Keep weapons and armour, but do not employ them;
Let everyone read and write,
Eat well and make beautiful things.
Live peacefully and delight in your own society;
Dwell within cock-crow of your neighbours,
But maintain your independence from them.

اگر كشوري خردمندانه اداره شود،
ساكنانش خوشنود خواهند بود.
از دسترنج شان لذت مي برند
و از آن جايي كه خانه هايشان را دوست دارند
علاقه به سفر را از دست مي دهند.
ممكن است در اين كشور چند وسيله ي نقليه و قايق وجود داشته باشد
ولي به جايي نمي رود.
ممكن است انبارهاي ادوات جنگي وجود داشته باشند
ولي كسي از آن ها استفاده نمي كند.
مردم از خوراكشان لذت مي برند
و از زندگي با خانواده هايشان شادند.
تعطيلات را در باغچه هايشان سپري مي كنند
و از كمك به همسايگان خوشنود مي شوند.
حتي اگر كشور همسايه به قدري به آن ها نزديك باشد كه
صداي خروس ها يا پارس سگ هايشان را به سادگي بشنوند،
از اين كه بدون سفر كردن به كشور همسايه در سن پيري بميرند،
راضي اند.

81. The Sage

81

Honest people use no rhetoric;
Rhetoric is not honesty.
Enlightened people are not cultured;
Culture is not enlightenment.
Content people are not rich;
Riches are not contentment.
So the sage does not serve himself;
The more he does for others, the more he is satisfied;
The more he gives, the more he receives.
Nature flourishes at the expense of no one;
So the sage benefits all men and contends with none.

كلام حقيقت عاري از آراستگي
و كلام آراسته از حقيقت خالي است.
خردمندان نيازي نمي بينند تا منظورشان را اثبات كنند؛
آنان كه سعي در اثبات نظرات شان دارند از خرد بويي نبرده اند.
فرزانه دارايي اي ندارد.
هرچه بيشتر به ديگران ياري مي رساند،
شادتر مي شود.
هرچه بيشتر به ديگران مي بخشد،
غني تر مي شود.
تائو بي اصرار و پافشاري، قوت مي بخشد.
فرزانه با رها كردن ميل به تسلط، رهبري مي كند.
