“Sirs! this is an innocent child, and has only been a few days with that esquire, and knows no more than your worships. He used to come to our house and we gave him to eat what we could spare, for the love of God, and at night he went to sleep with the esquire.”

Mon innocence reconnue, ils me lâchèrent et me mirent en liberté.

Seeing that I was innocent they let me go.

Puis, l’alguazil et le greffier demandèrent leurs droits à l’homme et à la femme ; sur quoi il y eut entre eux grand débat et rumeur,

Then the officer and the scrivener asked for their fees from the man and the old woman, over which there was much contention and noise.

They declared that they ought not to be forced to pay, for they had got nothing to pay with, and that the seizure of goods had not been made.

The others maintained that they had been taken away from other business of more consequence.

Finally, after making a great noise, they went away, and I do not know how it ended.

Lazaro finds himself deserted by his master.
Having rested from my past troubles I went about to seek employment. Thus I left my poor third master, and know not his unhappy fate.

Par quoi j’achevai de reconnaître ma déplorable fortune, qui, se déclarant tant et plus contre moi, conduisait mes affaires tout à rebours ; car, tandis qu’il est d’usage que les serviteurs abandonnent leurs maîtres, dans mon cas il en fut autrement, mon maître m’ayant laissé et s’étant sauvé de moi.

Looking back at all that had gone against me, I found that I had managed my affairs in a reverse way. Masters are usually deserted by their boys, but with me it was not so. For my master deserted and fled from me.

I had to seek for my fourth master. He was a friar of the Order of Mercy, who was pointed out to me by my girl-friends.

They called him a relation.

Grand ennemi du chœur et de manger au couvent, il se serait damné pour courir dehors, et aimait particulièrement les affaires séculières et les visites, tant que je pense qu’il rompait à lui seul plus de souliers que tout le reste du couvent.

He was a great enemy of the choir, and of having his meals in the convent. He was fond of walking about, of secular business, and of paying visits, so much so that I think he wore out more shoes than any one else in the convent.

The friar gave me the first shoes I ever burst in my life.

They did not last eight days. I could not endure so much trotting about.

My fifth master chanced to be a man engaged in the sale of Papal Indulgences. He was the most shameless and impudent distributor of them that ever I saw or hope to see, nor do I believe that any one else ever saw one like him.

car il avait et cherchait à cette fin des moyens et manières, et de forts subtils expédients.

For he had and sought out his own modes and methods, and very cunning inventions.

En entrant dans les villages où il devait présenter la bulle, premièrement il offrait aux prêtres ou curés quelques menues choses, qui n’avaient non plus grande valeur ni substance, une laitue murcienne, si c’était la saison, une couple de limons ou d’oranges, une alberge, quelques pêches, ou à chacun une poire bergamote.

Coming to the place where he wanted to effect the sales, he began by making trifling presents to the clergy, but nothing of any great value: a lettuce of Murcia if it was the season, a couple of lemons or oranges, a peach, a couple of nectarines, or some green pears.

De cette manière il tâchait de se les rendre propices, afin qu’ils lui témoignassent leur reconnaissance en favorisant son négoce et en exhortant leurs ouailles à prendre la bulle.

In this way he got them into good humour for favouring his business, and inducing their parishioners to buy his Indulgences.

Il s’informait de l’instruction des prêtres, et, s’il apprenait qu’ils sussent le latin, il n’en soufflait un traître mot pour ne point broncher, mais usait d’un gentil et bien troussé castillan et d’un langage fort libre ; si, au contraire, on lui rapportait que lesdits prêtres étaient de ces révérends qui sont plutôt ordonnés pour leur argent que pour leurs lettres ou leur piété, il jouait devant eux au saint Thomas, et deux heures durant parlait latin, ou du moins quelque chose qui y ressemblait, encore que ce n’en fût pas.

Subtle contrivances of the seller of Indulgences.
If they said that they understood Latin, he did not say a word in that language, for fear of stumbling, but he resorted a gentle and well-considered way of telling his story, with a most seductive tongue. If he found that the clergy were of the reverend class, he talked to them in Latin for two hours, at least what appeared like Latin, though it might not have been so.

When the people did not buy the Indulgences freely, he sought how to make them do so by bringing trouble on their village.

At other times he tried cunning tricks.

But as all his devices would take long to relate, I will only recount one that was specially subtle, and proved his sufficiency.

En un lieu de la Sagra de Tolède, où il avait prêché deux ou trois jours, faisant ses diligences accoutumées, les gens ne lui avaient pas pris la bulle, ni, à ce qu’il me parut, n’avaient envie de la lui prendre.

He had preached for two or three days in a village near Toledo, using all his accustomed arts, but no one had bought an Indulgence, nor was there any sign of an intention to do so.

Il s’en donnait au diable, et, ayant pensé ce qu’il devait faire, résolut de convoquer le peuple pour le lendemain au matin expédier la bulle.

He had devoted them all to the Devil, and was meditating what to do next, when he determined to call the parishioners together the next morning and make a last effort.

La veille au soir, après souper, l’alguazil et lui s’étant mis à jouer la collation, eurent dispute à propos du jeu et de mauvaises paroles, lui appelant l’alguazil larron,

That night he and the constable, after supper, sat down to play at cards, and they began to quarrel over the game, and make use of bad language.

et l’alguazil l’appelant faussaire.

The seller of Indulgences called the constable a thief, and the constable called him a liar.

Sur quoi M. le Commissaire mon maître prit une pique qui était au-dessus de la porte du lieu où ils jouaient,

On this my master took up a lance which was in the doorway.

et l’alguazil mit la main à l’épée qu’il portait à sa ceinture.

The constable put his hand on his sword.

Au bruit et aux cris que tous nous fîmes, les hôtes et les voisins accoururent et s’interposèrent ;

At the row they were making the guests and neighbours came and got between them.

mais les deux joueurs, fort en colère, tâchaient de se dégager de ceux qui les séparaient et voulaient s’entre-tuer.

In great fury the combatants struggled to free themselves and get at each other.

Et comme au grand vacarme le monde s’amassait, tellement que la maison en était toute pleine, eux, voyant qu’ils ne pouvaient s’attaquer avec leurs armes, échangeaient des paroles injurieuses,

But as the place was full of people they saw that they would be prevented from fighting, so they again resorted to abusive language.

et, entre autres, l’alguazil dit à mon maître qu’il était un faussaire et que les bulles qu’il prêchait étaient fausses.

Among other things the constable said to my master that he was a liar, and that the Indulgences about which he preached were false.

Finalement, les gens du lieu, ne réussissant pas à les apaiser, décidèrent de conduire l’alguazil de ce logis à un autre,

At last the people, as they could not pacify the disputants, determined to take the constable away.

et ainsi mon maître resta seul, fort irrité.

Thus my master was left in a great rage.

Puis les hôtes et les voisins l’ayant prié d’oublier sa colère, il s’en alla dormir, et nous tous fûmes nous coucher.

Later on the guests and neighbours entreated him to moderate his anger and go to bed, which in the end we all did.

Le matin venu, mon maître se rendit à l’église et fit sonner la messe et le sermon pour expédier la bulle.

When morning came my master went to the church to arrange about the Mass, and about preaching the sermon to announce the Indulgences.

Le peuple s’assembla, murmurant des bulles, disant qu’elles étaient fausses et que l’alguazil lui-même, en disputant, l’avait découvert ;

The people assembled, but they came murmuring at the Indulgences, saying that they were false, and that the constable himself had found it out.

de manière que si par avant ils n’avaient déjà guère envie de prendre la bulle, cela la leur fit détester du tout au tout.

If before they disliked buying them they now detested the idea.

M. le Commissaire monta en chaire et commença son sermon, excitant les gens à ne pas renoncer à un si grand bien et à l’indulgence que la sainte bulle leur conférait.

The seller of Indulgences begins his sermon.
The commissary or seller of Indulgences went up into the pulpit, and began his sermon by urging the people not to fail in getting the benefit of such a blessing and such Indulgences as the sacred Bull brought them.

Or, tandis qu’il était au plus beau du sermon, voici l’alquazil qui entre par la porte de l’église, fait sa prière, puis, se levant, d’une voix haute et grave, commence posément à dire :

When he was in the middle of his sermon the constable entered by the door of the church, and when he had said a prayer, he got up and addressed the people in a loud voice.

« Bonnes gens, écoutez-moi un mot, et après vous écouterez qui vous voudrez. Sachez que je suis venu ici avec ce charlatan qui vous prêche et qui m’a enjôlé et persuadé de l’aider en cette affaire, à condition que nous partagerions le profit. Mais maintenant, considérant le tort que je causerais à ma conscience et à votre bourse, je me repens de ce que j’ai fait et vous déclare ouvertement que les bulles qu’il prêche sont fausses, que vous ne devez ni le croire ni les prendre, et que je n’ai en cela part directe ni indirecte ; ce que je prouve en renonçant dès à présent à ma verge et la jetant par terre,

Sham denunciation of the Indulgences by the constable.
“Good people,” he said, “hear one word from me, and then listen to any one you like. I came here with this cheat who is preaching to you, and he deceived me. He said that I should help him in this business, and that we would divide the profits. Now see the harm he would have done to my conscience and to your pockets. I plainly declare to you that the Indulgences he is preaching about are false, and that you should not believe in them nor buy them. I will not be a party to it, directly nor indirectly. From this time I give up the wand of office and put it on the ground.

afin que si un jour cet homme est puni pour sa fausseté, vous me soyez témoins que je n’ai pas été avec lui ni ne lui ai prêté assistance, mais que je vous ai détrompés en dénonçant sa malice. »

If hereafter this man is punished for his falsehoods, you must be my witness that I am not a party to them, and have neither aided nor abetted them. On the contrary, I have undeceived you and exposed his imposture.”

Et il termina ainsi sa harangue.

Then he concluded his speech.

Quelques personnes honorables qui étaient là voulurent se lever et chasser l’alguazil de l’église pour éviter le scandale ;

Some respectable men wanted to take the constable and turn him out of the church to avoid scandal.

mais mon maître les retint et commanda à tous, sous peine d’excommunication, de ne point le violenter et de lui laisser dire tout ce qu’il voudrait.

But my master raised his hand and ordered that no one should molest him on pain of excommunication.

Lui-même garda le silence pendant que l’alguazil dit ce que j’ai rapporté.

He declared that the constable must be allowed to say whatever he liked.

Et, lorsque celui-ci se tut, mon maître lui dit que s’il voulait parler encore, qu’il parlât.

When the constable had finished, my master asked him whether he wanted to say anything more.

Et l’alguazil répondit : « Il y a bien plus à dire sur vous et votre fausseté, mais cela suffit pour l’instant. »

The constable replied, “I could say a good deal more about your falsehoods, but this will do for the present.”

Alors M. le Commissaire, tombant à genoux dans la chaire, les mains jointes, les yeux levés au ciel, dit ceci :

The commissary then knelt down in the pulpit, clasped his hands, turned his eyes up, and said:

« Seigneur Dieu, à qui aucune chose n’est cachée, mais toutes sont manifestes, et à qui rien n’est impossible, tu sais la vérité et combien je suis injustement outragé. En ce qui me touche, je le pardonne, pour que toi, Seigneur, tu me pardonnes. Ne prends point garde à cet homme qui ne sait ce qu’il dit, ni ce qu’il fait. Mais l’injure à toi faite, je te prie et te requiers, au nom de la justice, de ne la point dissimuler,

Sham miracle worked on the constable.
“O Lord! from whom nothing is hidden, and to whom all things are known, to whom nothing is impossible but all things are possible, Thou knowest the truth and how unjustly I have been accused. All that concerns myself I freely pardon, as Thou, Lord, hast pardoned me. Look not at this man who knows not what he does or says. I only pray for justice.

car peut-être se trouve-t-il ici quelqu’un qui pensait prendre la bulle et qui, ayant ajouté foi aux paroles fausses de cet homme, est près d’y renoncer. Et cela devant être si préjudiciable au prochain, je te supplie, Seigneur, de ne le point dissimuler, mais de montrer ici promptement un miracle qui ait lieu en cette forme : si ce que celui-ci a dit est vrai et si je suis coupable de malice et de fausseté, que cette chaire s’abîme avec moi et descende sept brasses sous terre, d’où elle ni moi ne reparaissions jamais ; si, au contraire, ce que je dis est vrai et si cet homme, à l’instigation du démon et pour priver et frustrer ceux qui sont ici d’un si grand bien, a menti méchamment, qu’il soit châtié et qu’à tous soit manifestée sa malice. »

Some who are present may perchance have intended to take these holy Indulgences, and on hearing the false words of that man they may have changed their minds. So I pray to Thee, O Lord, that Thou wilt work a miracle in this way. If what my accuser says is true, that I am evil and false, let this pulpit sink from me forty feet under ground, and never appear again. But if what I say is true, and that man is persuaded by the Devil to try to deprive those present of such great benefits, let him be punished, that all may know his malice.”

À peine mon dévot maître avait-il terminé son oraison, que le misérable alguazil tomba de son haut et donna si grand coup, que l’église tout entière en retentit ; puis se mit à bramer, à lancer de l’écume par la bouche, à la tordre, à faire des grimaces avec son visage, à se débattre des pieds et des mains et à se rouler de côté et d’autre sur le sol.

Scarcely had my devout master finished his speech when the bad constable fell to the ground with such a noise that the church resounded. Then he began to groan and foam at the mouth, making hideous faces, throwing about his arms and legs, and rolling about on the ground.

Le tumulte et les cris des assistants étaient tels qu’entre eux ils ne s’entendaient plus. Plusieurs étaient épouvantés et perplexes ;

The noise made by the people was so great that they could not hear each other speak. Some were astounded and terrified.

les uns disaient : « Dieu le secoure et le sauve » ;

Others cried to God for help.

d’autres : « C’est bien fait pour lui, puisqu’il porte un faux témoignage. »

Finalement, quelques-uns, non sans grande frayeur, à mon avis, s’approchèrent et le saisirent par les bras, dont il donnait à la ronde de fortes gourmades ; d’autres le prirent par les jambes, les empoignant solidement, car on n’eût trouvé au monde mule vicieuse qui lançât de si violentes ruades.

A few, not without trepidation, took his arms and held his legs, for there is not a mule in the world that could have given fiercer kicks.

Et, à plus de quinze ensemble, le maintinrent ainsi un long temps, l’alguazil leur distribuant à tous des coups à pleines mains et frappant sur le museau de ceux qui se relâchaient.

So they held him for a long time, there being more than fifteen men keeping him down, and to all he gave blows, and, if they were not careful, kicks also.

Pendant que ceci se passait, le seigneur mon maître était agenouillé dans sa chaire, les mains et les yeux tendus vers le ciel, et comme transporté en la divine essence ; en sorte que ni les plaintes, ni le bruit, ni les clameurs qui remplissaient l’église n’étaient capables de le tirer de sa pieuse contemplation.

All this time my master was on his knees in the pulpit, with hands and eyes raised to heaven, transported by the divine essence. The noise and disturbance in the church had no effect on his sacred contemplations.

Enfin ces bonnes gens s’approchèrent de lui, et, l’appelant, le réveillèrent et le supplièrent de secourir ce pauvre homme qui se mourait, sans tenir compte de ce qui s’était passé ni de ses mauvaises paroles, puisqu’il en avait déjà reçu le payement ; et lui dirent que s’il pouvait quelque chose pour délivrer l’alguazil du péril où il était et des souffrances qu’il souffrait, il le fît pour l’amour de Dieu, car ils étaient pleinement convaincus de la faute du coupable et de sa vérité et bonté à lui, le Seigneur, à sa requête et pour le venger, n’ayant voulu différer le châtiment.

The people intercede for the constable.
Some good men came to him, and, speaking loudly to arouse him, entreated him to succour that poor creature who was dying. They besought him not to dwell upon things that were past, and not to consider his evil deeds, as he had been punished. They prayed to him that, if he could do any good, he would deliver the man from his sufferings for the love of God. They declared that they clearly saw the sin of the culprit, and my master’s truth and goodness, but entreated him to pray to the Lord not to prolong the man’s punishment.

M. le Commissaire, comme qui se réveille d’un doux sommeil, les regarda, regarda le délinquant et tous ceux qui l’entouraient, puis, d’un ton fort posé, leur dit :

All the people pray for the constable to be forgiven.
The commissary, like one awaking from a delicious dream, looking long at the culprit and at those who were round him, then said:

« Bonnes gens, jamais vous n’auriez dû prier pour un homme en qui Dieu a si puissamment manifesté sa puissance ; toutefois, comme il nous commande de ne point rendre mal pour mal, mais de pardonner les injures, nous pouvons en confiance supplier Sa Majesté divine qu’Elle accomplisse ce qu’Elle nous ordonne de faire et pardonne à celui qui l’a offensée en mettant obstacle au triomphe de la sainte foi. Allons tous le prier. »

“My good friends, you have interceded for a man on whom God has so signally laid his Hands. But He has enjoined us not to return evil for evil, and to pardon injuries. We may confidently pray that His goodness will pardon this offender who has tried to put obstacles into the working of His holy faith. Let us all pray for this.”

Et, descendant de sa chaire, leur recommanda de supplier fort dévotement Notre-Seigneur d’avoir pour agréable de pardonner à ce pécheur, de lui rendre la santé et le bon sens et de chasser de son corps le démon, puisque Sa Majesté avait permis que pour son grand péché il y entrât.

He then came down from the pulpit, and desired that all should pray very devoutly to our Lord to pardon that sinner, and restore him to health and sound judgment, delivering him from the Devil, if, for his great sin, the Evil One had been permitted to enter into him.

Tous se jetèrent à genoux, et, devant l’autel, avec les prêtres, commencèrent à chanter à voix basse une litanie, tandis que monsieur mon maître, prenant la croix et l’eau bénite, alla auprès de l’alguazil, sur le corps duquel il chanta ;

The farce is carried on to completion.
All went down on their knees before the altar, while the clergy began to chant a litany in a low voice, coming with a cross and the holy water, after singing over it.

puis, levant au ciel ses mains et ses yeux, dont on ne voyait presque plus rien qu’un peu de blanc, commença une oraison, non moins longue que dévote, qui fit pleurer toute l’assistance (comme il arrive coutumièrement aux sermons de la Passion, lorsqu’ils sont prêchés par un dévot prédicateur à un auditoire dévot), suppliant Notre-Seigneur, qui ne veut pas la mort du pécheur, mais sa vie et son repentir, de pardonner et de donner vie et santé à ce malheureux, induit par le démon et sollicité par la mort et le péché, afin qu’il se repentît et confessât ses fautes.

My master raised his hands to heaven, and turned his eyes up until scarcely anything could be seen but the whites. He then commenced an address not less long than devout, which made the people weep as they do over a sermon on the Passion delivered by a famous preacher. He prayed to the Lord not to require the death of the sinner, but rather to give his life back to one who had been led away by the Devil, that, being convinced of his sin unto death, he might receive pardon, life, and health, and that he might repent and confess.

Cela fait, il commanda d’apporter la bulle, qu’il mit sur la tête de l’alguazil.

This done, he would receive the Indulgence.

Aussitôt le pécheur commença à se sentir mieux et peu à peu reprit connaissance.

Presently the sinful constable began gradually to recover until he was himself again.

Et, lorsqu’il fut bien retourné en son bon sens, il se jeta aux pieds de M. le Commissaire et lui demanda pardon, confessant avoir dit ce que j’ai rapporté par la bouche et le commandement du démon, premièrement pour faire tort à mon maître et se venger de l’injure qu’il en avait reçue, puis, surtout, à cause que le démon était très chagrin du bien que les gens allaient recevoir en prenant la bulle.

When he was well, he fell at the feet of the commissary asking for pardon, and confessing that what he had said was by order of the Devil, to do my master harm and to be avenged on him, but principally because the Devil was very much annoyed at the good that was done by the Indulgences being received.

Le seigneur mon maître lui pardonna et tous deux se réconcilièrent.

My master pardoned him, and signs of friendship were passed between them.

Et à prendre la bulle il y eut si grande presse, qu’en tout le village âme vivante ne s’en voulut passer : mari et femme, garçons et filles, serviteurs et servantes, tous la prirent.

Then there was such eagerness to buy the Indulgences that scarcely a soul in the place was without one—husbands and wives, sons and daughters, boys and girls.

La nouvelle du cas se répandit par les villages circonvoisins, de sorte que, lorsque nous y arrivions, il n’était pas besoin de prêcher le sermon ni d’aller à l’église, car les gens venaient prendre les bulles au logis, comme si ç’avaient été des poires qu’on eût donné gratis.

The news of what had happened soon spread to the neighbouring villages, and when we came to them it was not necessary to preach nor even to go to church.

De manière que, dans dix ou douze villages des alentours où nous fûmes, mon maître distribua tout autant de milliers de bulles sans la moindre prédication.

In ten or twelve villages of that neighbourhood where we were, my master sold as many thousand Indulgences, without having to preach a single sermon.

Quand le tour fut joué, je dois confesser humblement que, comme les autres, j’en fus épouvanté et crus que c’était vrai ; mais après, à entendre les rires et moqueries qu’en firent mon maître et l’alguazil, je compris que tout avait été imaginé par mon industrieux et inventif maître,

Lazaro was behind the scenes.
When he performed this farce, I confess that I was astounded and believed like many others. But afterwards I was a witness to the jokes and laughter that my master and the constable had over the business. I knew how it had been planned and arranged by the industry and inventive talent of my master.
